Qualei grew up in a large group of Fae and had very little contact with other dragon species. She was constantly curious of how they lived and worked outside of her sheltered world and desperately wanted to explore their world. Though she longed to know more about her world, Qualei was constantly caught in between her studies and her nature. As a Fae, she could never manage to focus long enough to learn anything of any importance. Hoping to set her on the right path, Qualei's parents sent her to study in Sunbeam ruins with the Light Flight, much to the astonishment and anger of the rest of her colony. When she got there however, she was constantly harassed and teased by the Pearlcatchers who lived there. They insisted that she go back to the Tangled Wood with the rest of her kind and stop encroaching on their studies. Heartbroken and fearing she would never be accepted back to her home, Qualei fled from both Flights and in a particularly rough storm, became stranded in the middle of the Shrieking Wilds.

Wounded and afraid for her life, Qualei wandered through the dense woods, trying to find her way out. In her desperate attempts, she managed to get herself tangled in a thicket in the middle of the Shrieking Wilds. After several days, a lone Guardain came upon her and helped her from the vines. The dragon introduced himself as Kejaro and declared that she was his charge. Riding on his shoulder, Qualei learned that Kejaro had been adventuring on The Search, trying to find his charge. Qualei was ecstatic at the thought of having such a close friend and the two journeyed together through the Shrieking Wilds. Near the end of their journey, the pair was attacked by a rouge Beast and Kejaro was horribly injured trying to protect Qualei.

Qualei was able to defeat the Beast and guided her friend to the closest clan she could find: Jae's. Once there, Qualei pleaded with the Guardian leader to save her friend. After some discussion with her charge, a Mirror named Meelo, the Guardian allowed it. Meelo helped Qualei to heal Kejaro and he was soon strong again. Unfortunately, Jae announced that Qualei would be forced to leave the clan, as Jae didn't trust a shadow dragon in her family. Terrified at the idea of being rejected yet again, Qualei pleaded to stay in the clan. Kejaro came to her aid and refused to stay in the clan without Qualei. Meelo also stepped forward and vouched for Qualei. Reluctantly, Jae allowed the Fae to stay. Qualei vowed to make it up to Jae.

Qualei kept her promise and helped her new clan in any way that she could. She devised new plans for their treetop shelters, patrol schedules, and maps of the nearby areas. She volunteered for Gathering patrols with her new mate, Kejaro, and when Remara hatched, Qualei offered to train her to protect the clan. Seeing her dedication to the clan, Jae promoted her to the official strategist of the clan.

Qualei continued to serve her clan and leader and always contributed as much as she could. She encouraged the younger members of the clan to not be afraid to propose their new ideas and thoughts.
