History Remembered
"Listen, and remember."
spaaaaaaaaaace XRLXA9U.png2iCvw0g.pngr40kQDf.pngvgZFjhe.pnge7NCmti.png

Ink fades and places can be lost, and never found again. Memory, too, is not infallible. Age and disease and the withering take and corrode what once was the most important thing in the world. The face of a lover, the name of a child, the sound of laughter on the wind. These things cannot be written down, cannot be passed along the ages any other way than by that of the living words.

Kirosth chose, all those many years ago, to follow Thailyn into a stasis that would carry them so far into the future as to be unthinkable, and to take with him all the stories and legends and memories of his time, held within his mind. In the half-consciousness of that dream, he repeated each of the things he had learned to himself over and over and over, all so that he would not forget, that the knowledge would become so ingrained as to become a part of him, immutable and unforgettable. He succeeded, and in doing so left behind the trappings of dragonkind to become something else.

I was not born a mage. In the years I was born, everyone had magic, but only a few were powerful enough to earn that title; in modern times, I am considered powerful. It was a shock when we first woke to this age, and I don't think I've ever quite gotten over that. Even now, one of the hatchlings or a visitor will call for a mage and I will look around to see who they are speaking to before I realize that it is meant for me. Thailyn brought with her all the magic and arcane and technical knowledge of our time; she is a mage. I'm just a storyteller.

The stasis made us both stronger, though it seems to have done so according to our strengths. Thailyn rebuilt herself and her magic so often that she became all but made of magic. I told myself the stories I was so desperate to never forget so many times that my voice has become a power all its own. We learned quickly upon our first ventures into the world beyond our waking place that anyone I spoke to became enraptured, entranced, unable to stop listening, especially if I was telling a story. It was extremely useful in the early years, before we found friends and allies and found ourselves beset by the troubles of a world we were not quite prepared for.

Even now, settled and with a clan of some power, my ability to hypnotize those who listen to me weave my craft has proved invaluable. Even with Thailyn and the other mages' protections, both from this world and those beyond, we still occasionally get unwelcome visitors. Those who do make it through are usually easily turned by my voice. The few who are not can be either dealt with or run into the deep darkness of the shadows beyond the Grove. Though Thailyn and I were here in stasis for ages of the world, something moved in while we slept, and we have yet to root it out entirely.

My control of my power is better now. At first, speaking at all would induce the effect. Now, I may speak normally and even story-weave without fear of accidentally leading someone into following. With time and practice has come a fine-tuned control. A weapon, some might say. I do not see it so. I was not born with enough magic in my own time to be trained as a combat mage; I tell stories. That I have developed power through that is only a result of circumstance and time. The mortality I left behind to do so is only one of the many things I have sacrificed to be here today.

I would not trade any of what I have gained to recover what I have lost. For I have succeeded in my goals. The history we remembered has not been lost, and Thailyn has not been left alone.
