Philander is the revered forefather and pioneer of the Mangata Roundclaws, first in the chain of command. All major clan decisions go through him, and he takes a simplistic, open-minded approach to this authority. It is also Philander's responsibility to name new clan members and to oversee the communal rearing of hatchlings.

Philander dedicates himself fully to supervising and supporting his found family. His unique, seemingly innate wisdom makes him a natural leader and fatherly figure to the rest of the clan. And though he has not sired any offspring of his own for years, his title of "progenitor" is undisputed - such is the power of his influence.
