ENMA
THE KNIGHT-IN-TRAINING

Enma was the heiress to a clan long gone, a legacy she would never know. Her mother, Ninmah: the once-leader of a formidable clan in the Ashfall Wastes, left her home when rampaging Emperors destroyed all she had built. Her lair had been her charge and to see it and everyone she loved torn apart by the mindless beasts filled her with terrible grief and shame. Ninmah had wandered as far away from her old home as she could, hoping for nothing more than to escape the ghosts of her past. Fate drove her to the Starfall Isles, where she took a new mate and had what would be the last of her offspring, her final legacy.

Enma's memories of her mother were fuzzy in the way hatchling memory tended to be. She remembered a smell she couldn't quite place, the shocking color of her mother's blue eyes, the safe warmth of the fire she kept burning. Perhaps it was this memory of fire that drove Enma to the Ashfall Wastes when her own Search for a charge began, or perhaps it went even deeper than that. All she had known at the time, still small in stature and wide-eyed with childlike wonder, was that something was pulling her and the closer she got to the Flamecaller's domain the stronger it became. The journey itself was long and tireless, her old home in the Starfall Isles so far from what would be her new home. But the strong, mysterious pull was enough to drive her forward and her travels had begun so early in her life that she hardly knew anything else.

Though young and inexperienced when she set out, it was a nearly-grown and experienced traveler that finally set her sights on her destination. It was a sight she had almost never thought she'd see, the end of her journey had seemed endless for so long. It was a sight she couldn't quite believe, mostly because it seemed so unusually ordinary. Was this plain formation of rock in the Ashfall Wastes her true destination? Her true charge? Or was it the Ridgeback that had appeared almost as if from the air, skin peppered with gems of liquid fire and expression shocked as if he'd seen a ghost?

It turned out to be neither the mountain, nor the Ridgeback, but rather his weave of connecting tunnels that crisscrossed inside and below the expanse of rock and cooled lava. The Ridgeback was larger than her and she had no problem traversing them.
