Halcyon spent so long honing her body to a knife’s edge, her bright hide a warning, her sharp claws a threat. She learned to ballast her fidgeting limbs and silence the noise in her mind, to find focus and surety in the study of her opponent’s movements. She was fierce and she was deadly, a good soldier for her clan, her home, and that exhausted satisfaction, she thought, was the same as happiness, or close enough.


She does not remember when that ceased to be true. It seemed like there ought to be a moment, something she could look back on, some instantaneous emptiness, looking at her bloody claws and thinking, I’m so tired. Instead it was a slow thing, creeping over her for months. There’s another moment she’d rather remember: wandering in Cloudsong, just after she left. She flew for fun, directionless, lost and revelling in it, and empty time stretched out in front of her, the whole of her life a blank space waiting to be drawn in. Eventually she tired, landed on a platform at random, and she'd been playing her harp on a street corner, sweet voice and jangling jewelry and sharp eyes, and there it was: the shape of her life to come.


She still studies movement, watches with intent: Penelope’s graceful, daring flips and dives, Persephone’s slow strides, Thalia’s confident strut. They’re so lovely, all of them, that she doesn’t know how to look away, and she is so full with wonder and gratitude that she doesn’t have the words for it. She translates devotion down strings and into wooden limbs, gives this puppet the curve of Penelope’s neck, that one the shake of Pepita’s tail, a language of little gestures.
