Thalia’s mother said: you were born in a thunderstorm; rain beat steady on the snare of the roof, and thunder rolled above, the sounding of a kettle-drum. With your first breath, you sang. Maybe it was true.

When she performed they called her by the names of songbirds; they said she had a voice like nectar, so sweet even butterflies stopped to listen. When they tried to speak to her and got no answer they called her meek, and shy, and they called themselves in love with her. Thalia smiled and nodded and kept her anger safe behind the cage of her teeth. Even with thousands of eyes on her she was invisible.

She thinks that’s why it was so easy to disappear: she had plenty of practice. She just left one night, traded her clothes for something slightly less fine and walked out into the streets of Cloudsong. She set up her harp on a streetcorner and sang freedom, wordless and sharp, and it was there Halcyon found her.

Halcyon says: if you are of a storm you are static in the air, electric and alive and lighting up the night. If you are of a plant you are a flower petal, bright and showy and saying, if you would have my sweetness you must bring me something in return. It takes a long time; Thalia still can’t distinguish the strange monotone words of common, and Halcyon has a poor ear, struggles to produce the tones of Coatl. Still, she keeps trying, and eventually Thalia understands her, and Thalia is glad. After all, it is true.
