Unwilling Host to the Shade
Dymon was barely older than a hatchling when he first encountered the Shade Emissary, a voice only he could hear deep in the darkest reaches of the Foxfire Brambles when he was out exploring with his siblings. He'd never felt like he fit with the rest of his clan, and it promised him everything he'd ever dreamed of; strength, safety, a place he could truly belong, and he naively believed it.
He approached the voice hoping his life was going to change. It did, but in ways he could never have imagined.
Something leapt into his body, and his soul was plunged into a silent, endless black.

He could have been there for minutes, it could have been days, or weeks, or years. Time was impossible to keep track of there, wherever he'd been. His fur felt matted and his feathers were sticky with what felt like a thick fluid, and his mouth felt coated with the same. He opened his eyes to a familiar gloom he thought he'd never see again. It was still dark but this was a welcoming darkness, the darkness of the Shadowbinder. He was home.
It took a long while for his eyes to focus, but when the world stopped being blurry, Dymon saw bars between himself and the forest. When he tried to move, chains around his legs clanked and rattled, weighing him to the floor. Viscous black liquid dripped from his skin and mouth, draining away through the edges of the cage.
In front of the cage stop another Skydancer in a lab coat, looking at Dymon over the top of his glasses. He smiled, oddly but not unkindly, and took a step towards the cage.
"Welcome back."
