Biography

Empyria
|| Magician's Guild Aeris || Potion Magus ||
sanity is madness put to good uses

tumblr_nvay8ne1FX1tjfdizo4_r1_400.png

A madcap, scattered, clever, and magically gifted Mirror, Empyria is Aeris of the Magician's Guild. She didn't achieve this royal status through any type of vote or right to rule, but more so because nobody is brave enough to challenge her. Not that she is especially cruel or unusually violent (though she does have a wicked temper), but she is very cunning and has her own particularly artful form of vengeance. In any case most of the Magus are content in letting her rule them as she tends to do so in a manner of absent-minded neglect. More preoccupied with her charms and potions than with ruling she generally ignores the acts of the other Guild members; only disciplining her subjects when prodded to do so by the Council. The exception to this rule is when it comes to the activities of her daughter-in-law Corumbra. Empyria distrusts and loathes the Imperial and keeps a close eye on her projects. However, as Corumbra is almost as cunning as Empyria (and a good deal more cruel) she hides her more unsavory projects extremely well and is almost never punished for them. While Empyria keeps a sharp eye on Corumbra she turns an equally blind one on her son's activities even though they are frequently entwined with those of his mate's.

When entering Empyria's work room (by invitation only!) one can usually find such treasures as magically preserved skinks, dried herbs that may-or-may-not be poisonous, bottles stoppered with crystals and filled with questionable substances, and shelves and shelves of books filled to bursting. This is where she makes her charms and potions and meticulously records every recipe and reaction. Ask her where to find the Essence of Longing and she'll unerringly point you to the back corner and tell you that it's behind the pile of dusty pile of used shrouds and under the dried Foxtail. Ask her what she had for breakfast and she'll look at you blankly. Augustus is frequently seen explaining to Empyria (very patiently and reasonably) why it is ok to step away from her cauldron for ten minutes to enjoy the night air and join him for a snack. A relationship that confounds the rest of the Vale, Empyria and Augustus are more than content together and rely on each other's skills for both work and happiness. Augustus is as steady as Empyria is capricious and finds that her energy and wit bring both light and excitement to his life. While Empyria treasures Augustus ability to understand her and to ground her volatile emotions.

Despite her eccentricity and legendary temper she is well respected and many dragons will travel weeks to buy her charms and potions. Occasionally Empyria’s unique sense of humor and justice will assert itself in her wares. In one memorable event a Pearlcatcher came to purchase a specific charm from her. Being one of those dragons that traveled weeks to reach her (and being a Pearlcatcher) he treated the gifted and crafty Magus with arrogance and disdain. He had requested a charm to increase his appearance of trustworthiness as he was trying to secure the role of Patriarch in his home clan and was being met with resistance. At the stated price of the charm the Pearlcatcher sneered that nothing a Mirror made could possibly be worth such a price. After a considerable amount of time in which he continued to deride Mirrors in general and Empyria in particular he agreed to a lower price. Empyria made him the charm, accepted the payment, and said not one word about the addition to the charm. When the Pearlcatcher returned to his home clan and activated the charm he found that his clanmates believed in him and trusted his every word, but he couldn’t understand why they kept giggling during his speeches. Arriving at his own den the infuriated Pearlcatcher demanded an explanation from his Ember Mouse familiar. Hearing his own voice echo from his tiny companion caused the Pearlcatcher to faint dead away, “Sir, you sound just like me!” Watching this scene through Murex’s scrying glass, Empyria cackled and marked down a notation in her spell book “Voice Swap Charm - Successful”.
