Lirael
Guardian of the Vines
Vintner & Ink Maker

"A suitable depth of color."

Lirael grew up in the Twisting Crescendo, and she has the usual temperament for a wind dragon - relaxed, peaceful, and refreshing as a summer breeze. But she wanted to see other parts of Sornieth, and so set off in search of her Charge, certain it couldn't be anywhere nearby.

It was early in her travels that she found a small plant, desperately struggling to grow despite clear signs that it had been trampled. Lirael, who had never thought much of plants at all, tried to walk by, but something drew her to this fragile life. She watched it for a few days, fascinated by its drive to flourish. When she realized that she couldn't leave its side, and she wanted it to thrive against all odds, she realized she had a problem.

She wanted to travel. And her Charge was a plant.

In desperation, she left her Charge unattended for a time and went in search of a nature dragon who could teach her a thing or two about whether or not she could have a mobile plant of some form. When she returned and the little plant was still quite fine, Lirael found herself filled with relief.

Together, she and her teacher found a small vessel in which to plant her Charge. This way she would be able to carry it with her always. And so, Lirael and her Charge began their first adventures, travelling Sornieth and finding beautiful places and interesting people.

She visited the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and there she and the little plant took in the sun. Under the careful ministrations of a water clan, Lirael's little Charge grew stronger and reached and stretched towards the sun before ultimately falling over. It seemed healthy enough, but not strong enough to stand on its own.

Dismayed again, Lirael traveled next to the Shrieking Wilds. There, a kindly old tundra informed her that the plant she had was a grape vine. It was its nature to climb things, and he helped her transplant the little vine into a more suitable home and constructed a small trellis for its use. Lirael stayed for a time, but she missed the open skies of her home and the water lands.

In time, her travels took her to Dragonhome. She'd never seen mountains of this magnitude before, and she eventually befriended a clan deep in Earth territory which called itself Oakrest. It had been founded by another guardian who had taken a plant as a charge, and she was astounded to learn that the tree that was his Charge now was the child of his original Charge.

Enchanted, she determined to stay. She made friends easily with Murphy, who helped her find a suitable plot of earth to become the permanent home of her little vine and establish a good vineyard. She also made friends with Clarion, who was pleased to reap the benefits of her harvest in the form of jams and preserves. And she also became quite fond of Deepbalm, the medic who devoted his attention to the injured fighters of the surface and Hunters in the tunnels beneath their subterranean homes.

While waiting for the harvest and between tending her vine, Lirael is the clan's inkmaker. She is slowly mastering the pigments necessary for different seals and scrollwork employed by Ink and Paige, as well as perfecting a long-lasting ink for use by Dana and Phlox in the library. And of course, other dragons also use her inks, for letter-writing, painting, and tattooing. She is fond of this occupation, and she hopes to pass it on to some of her children, should they show an aptitude.

Lirael and Deepbalm are an unremarkable pair of mates. They are both steady and constant in their loyalties and affections, and both very devoted to their crafts and their Charges. They enjoy quiet conversations, and Deepbalm occasionally offers up his nature magic for help with Lirael's vines, while she offers him little shows of wind while completely indoors, inciting her collection of mobiles to dance far above their shared chambers.
