.. "Find the prince. Bring him back alive. We must find the cup of life."

Those were the orders she and the other search parties were given, orders directly from the high council. As reluctant as she was to be a part of the whole thing, she was even more reluctant to disobey. She knew the consequences, and she was not willing to inflict them on herself or those she loved. Especially with how angry the council was. Their plans for immortality foiled by one of the princes, only a week before his marriage. The high council was furious. As soon as they were free from the fountain-turned-prison they ordered the search to begin.

The forest did not give up its secrets so easily. In any way it could it fought the fae parties; concealing paths and leading them astray. But Tana was not a fool, and she was not chosen for this mission for no reason. And she, too, had allies in the forest. Her own network of lesser fae that whispered to her when she was away from the rest of the search and told her where the prince had gone. "He is not in this realm anymore," they said, leading her through the forest. The forest was hesitant but gave her the way, knowing her heart was full of reluctance. And so, while her fellow fae were going in circles she was the sole one to move on towards the border. Towards the prince and the cup of life.

Tana did not think it was within the rights of the fae to demand for immortality. It was this that the forest saw, and this that made it let her through to the border. Her lesser fae helped her open the path, and pointed her down the one the prince had gone. She knew the forest could not hold off the other fae forever. Soon they, too, would find what she found. They, too, would know the path the prince took. She could only hope she would be the one to find him first. A whispered token of gratitude to the forest, to her lesser fae. And then she stepped through the border to find the prince.

~~

The prince was not easy to find. But her own lesser fae, the ones who dutifully followed her through the border, offered her as much assistance as they could. And with her magic soon she was able to find his trail.

The problem wasn't finding him, then. She had a limited amount of time before he would catch on that there was someone following him, stealth magic or not. And she knew when he knew she was following him. He evaded her constantly, and threw her off on false trails. "Not that one," one of her fae murmured, pointing to where the prince's signature was. And with her guides she followed relentlessly. She could not afford for anyone else to find him before her.

It took time. Time that, she knew, was detrimental to sonder's magic stores. He had to have been close to exhausting them. His signature was fading, in the way she knew that meant he was tiring. She herself rarely used her magic in her chase, save for keeping him in the dark about her following him for as long as possible. She slowed as his signature sparked, and then faded before disappearing. "A concealment spell," her fae whispered, their wings fluttering nervously.
"A last resort," she murmured, to herself. She flew.

She landed near where she had last sensed his magic. "Prince Sonder of the Lunam Clan; it would be of your best interest to drop the concealment spells you have placed upon yourself. Any further use of spells would only wear your likely strained magic resources." Formal words, for a fugitive and his huntress, but as a noble fae, even one of lower class, she was raised with formality ingrained in her mind.

She was not expecting him to drop the spells. But he did, walking towards her, head held high and fire in his eyes. Her eyes widened by a fraction when she caught sight of his wings, her own fluttering slightly. The cup was one with his wings. He would not be able to fly while they were bound.

Tana took a deep breath, realizing she had been staring. "I found you," she says after a pause, "and I think what you did was right. I do not want to help the high council, and I will not be taking you back. What do we do now?"

Prince Sonder didn't reply at first, and she was afraid she had been too forward. But then she noticed that he... Was he blushing? Frost shone on his cheeks and the grass around them froze. Suddenly worried, she asked if he was sick, perhaps. He assured her he was not, just tired and worn down. She felt slightly guilty, as had she revealed herself and her intentions before maybe he could have been less tired. But he moved on to their next course of action; which would be traveling to the next forest over. They could rest. Even with her magic stores not as depleted as his, she still felt physically tired and she figured he could use the down time more than she.

The new forest was strange, but welcoming to two foreign fae. She watched, intrigued, as he weaved together a shelter of trees with his magic. He gave her a bow and though shallow she found herself blushing as she entered. He hung back outside to carve runes into the trees, which relieved her slightly. Her entire life she was taught the courting trials of the fae, but nothing prepared her for being alone with a male that was neither related to her or her intended. As a prince she figured he would also be uncomfortable about it, so she made it her mission to try to make it as least awkward as possible.

After all, he already had an intended. But she was unsure of that, now, since she doubted he had plans to return to their realm for a wedding. His bride-to-be had been devastated, she remembered. "Only a week before our wedding," she had cried. "I don't understand why he would do this."
Her parents, too, had been outraged. "How dare he insult our daughter like this," they had said. "How dare he insult the fae." The last Tana had heard before she left, the jilted bride had rarely been venturing outside of her family's ground.

The prince startled her out of her thoughts. "Since we are to work together from this point on, I should really get your name. It would be more than uncordial of me to simply address you by rank. So, how should I call you Miss...?"

Her face burned. How could she forget to introduce herself, to a prince no less? "Tana," she says, curtsying, as is fitting for someone of his rank.

Despite her unintentional rudeness of not introducing herself before, he seemed to take now offence. He smiles as he says, "Alright then, Tana. Why don't he rest for the night and then formulate a plan tomorrow at dawn."

Sleep should have been easy for her to come by, but even though she had promised herself to not make it awkward, it still felt inherently off to sleep while able to see Sonder. They didn't have a choice, yes, but just as fae with no relation were rarely alone together, they didn't sleep enar each other. This was breaking every social manner she had been taught growing up, but she supposed she would just have to deal with it. They were going to be working together, after all, and they could not get hung up on etiquette of a society they had left behind. Eventually she managed to settle her mind and fall asleep.

Tana woke before Sonder, but that did not surprise her. While she had been tired, she was most likely not nearly as tired as he. So she left him to rest and went to gather food, which she figured they were also in dire need. She found some bushes that had berries, and she filled a pouch with them. It wasn't a large amount, but she knew it would be enough for then. When she returned to their shelter she found that he was awake, poring over scrolls of parchment. She dropped the pouch of berries in front of him. Instantly his wings rose, but then the weight of the cup forced them back down. Her wings twitched. She could not imagine the burden he had to bear. A quick spell and his wings looked void of anything amiss.

Prince Sonder looked towards the berries. "I apologize, I got so caught up in what we needed to have ready that I forgot to see that you were awake for this," he says, "though it seems you've beaten me to waking as well."

"We'll need food before moving on and I thought I'd give you time to draw up a battle plan, your highness," she replies. She moved to bow before him before stopping herself just in time. That was not needed here, now, and she would have to get used to being informal.

If he noticed her blunder, he does not mention it. "Ah, please, if I am to only call you Tana, I would like you to return the favor and simply call me Sonder," he says instead, pulling out more parchment. "As far as battle plans go, I thought-"

A thought struck her, then, and she could not help herself. "THEY DON'T KNOW-" she blurts, and then she felt mortified because she cut off a prince and she was sure that was a disrespect he cannot forgive.

But he didn't punish her at all. "I, um, I'm sorry, but I don't know what-" and then he stopped talking so she could continue, something that surprised her greatly.

Her words come out in a rush, "The high council; I just-- I was mostly bluffing. When we first met, I mean." She took a breath, to calm herself down and so what she is saying could be understood, "I knew you were likely to be weaker if you had been using your powers to constantly avoid me, but I didn't know-- no one knew about where...how you had hidden the cup." The 'besides me' hung in the air; unspoken but both of them knew it was there.

"Oh," is all he says. "Thank you for letting me know." Tana felt slightly guilty at that; clearly it was still an uncomfortable topic for him and she had unknowingly brought it up. When he changed the subject she didn't protest.

"I have some ideas of what we can do to stay quite a few steps ahead of those chasing up, but I'd like your thoughts as well." He gave her a smile but she was still thrown off. He wanted her opinions? No one ever asked her for those back in their home realm. "You have more experience in this than I and I thought it would be best to hear what you think." Tana was onestly stunned that he wanted to hear anything she said at all. She stuttered a bit as she spoke, but together they began to plan.

~~

Tana was in love with him. Of that she was sure. They had been working together and evading their hunters for just a little over a year, and over that time she had absolutely fallen for him. She had to fight to keep herself from blushing every time he smiled at her, or laughed, or... Did anything, really. It was embarrassing for him to catch her blushing, but even more so if she flickered out of sight entirely just because of him.

They had other things on their mind, too, and she couldn't let her feelings get in their way. Their lesser fae turned spies had told them that their hunters had made it past the border. They'd have to be even more careful, then. She was doubling back to make sure to conceal or erase any evidence they may have left behind, and to set up false leads.

"I don't understand why neither of you have spoken of your feelings," Wraith said.

Tana sighed. While great spies, her lesser fae had been constantly bugging her about her growing attraction for Sonder. "It's not that easy."

"Of course it is!" Banshee piped up. "All you have to d is go up to him and-"

"Shhh! They're talking!" Ifrit whispered. Tana stopped just beyond the clearing where Sonder was talking to his own band of lesser fae.

"I know I just--Forest help me, I get so flustered when I'm around her I don't know how to act. 300 painstaking years of learning social etiquette and what to do and say around others and here I am, finally hopelessly in love with someone and I can't... I just lose my head around her. Forest; Tana is the one good thing that's happened to me after this all started and I just don't want to mess that up. I am so far gone on her and I don't know how I'm meant to let her know that."

She couldn't believe what she just heard. She stood there in shock, her magic signature dampened and her form invisible. Forest, she had to go before that wore off. She took off, only stopping when she was a safe distance away. When her magic had worn off she loudly started back towards the clearing, making sure to step on a dead branch so Sonder would know she was coming.
"Good luck," Ifrit said with a wink.

When she emerged Sonder had dropped his case that he kept all of their important papers in. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you, Sonder." She bent down to retrieve the cylinder.

"No, no, it's fine. I'm just not used to you all but announcing your arrival back," he said, which was true. A naturally stealthy fae, she usually never announced her arrival. "Once we go over what you've learned from your scouting trip, we can make plans and then find somewhere to rest. Though if you want to rest for a bit before then, that's fine as well, you must be tired from having to use your magic so often recently."

The concern in his voice was obvious. "Ah, I'm fine; let's just get this dealt with first and then we can get some rest," she said quickly, her form flickering briefly. She opened the case and was about to remove the papers before she stopped, shocked.

"Tana? Are you alright?" Sonder moved closer to her, which didn't help her composure.

"I can open this." Her voice betrayed none of the emotions she was feeling.

"Yes? I don't now what you m-" She cut him off.

She looked at him. "Sonder you charmed this; specifically to keep others out and I can open it." She was confused, yes, but there were no words to describe how that made her feel.

Tana put the cap back on the case, staring at Sonder as he spoke, clearly nervous. "I, um, I had only charmed it to keep out those I didn't trust. If, if it really bothers you I could just--"

Tossing the case to the side, she closed the space between him. It was now or never, she decided. If he cared for her as much as it seemed she did for him, then she wanted to show him. She pulled him towards her by his collar and kissed him. He did nothing at first, and a brief bolt of panic went through her - was this too forward? Did he not want this? - and she started to pull away. But then he was pulling her back and they were kissing again and he was in love with her and she was in love with him and she would no longer keep that a secret. He meant the world to her, and he had to know.

A kiss, and a promise: to run, to hide, to survive. To help each other and be together, through and through. To live.
