Nerve was born with a hereditary deformity that makes his skin translucent and the underlying nerves and sinew exposed and vulnerable. Nerve has overcompensated for this handicap from a young age. He's a proud dragon and refuses to let his deformity become a true weakness. He's emotionally shut off as a defense mechanism and is only open about his feelings (to an extent) with his ward, Grit, and fellow outcast and friend, Hera.

He has made it his life's mission to deprive his father, Ripto, and Ripto's mate, Pitch, from experiencing the joy of raising a child. Ripto broke his mother's heart, forcing her to abandon him and the clan. He blames Ripto, and vows to kill any offspring from Ripto's new mate. The couple can only keep their offspring in the clan while they're small enough to be hidden, but once they become the size of adults, if they haven't found a home in another clan yet, they are exalted to the Icewarden to protect them from Nerve's wrath.
