Biography
I, the Hand Sinister, say unto you to bow to me as you would The Mother. Bow, and I will lift you up beyond contamination, beyond plague, and into Her embrace.
~ Kishna ~
|
Sinister Haughty and vain, Kishna leads the Inculcators of the clan as Khatun Shiv leads Outfit Vector. Through her the mirrors of the outfit channel their devotion and worship of the Plaguebringer and she guides their spiritual lives along a sinuous path that serves her own ends as much as the Mother's. A Necromancer among Necromancers, Kishna bedecks herself in the jewels of her office, choosing the ruby, Queen of Stones, as her Necromantic symbol. While Kishna and her mate, Kobari, both serve as spiritual leaders there is no question who holds ultimate authority. She is a powerhouse, on par with Lieutenant Izhu in the hierarchy of the clan, and her role as Spokesperson to Mother means that even Khatun Shiv will defer to her on occasion. Kishna relishes this power, though she wields it with a light touch. She considers herself above Outfit Vector's daily duties, instead holding court to those who would curry her favor or picking through the spoils of the trading caravan to claim her due of jewels and rich fabrics. All Necromancers have their infectionist specialties and Kishna excels in the art of interpreting auguries. The most recent addition to her entourage is the coy and wicked-tongued Juyn, who is renowned for being able to make the imperious Necromancer laugh. Kishna treats her as a confidante, assistant, or servant, depending on her moods, and trusts her with tasks that even Kobari isn't privy too. If she notices that Juyn is occasionally seen at Lieutenant Izhu's side, she doesn't give any indication of it. |
History
The first hatchling of her parent's first clutch, Kishna knew deep in her bones that she was meant for something great. Called Gristle then, she sought out her clan's barren matriarch and demanded to be adopted into the ruling line, much to the chagrin of her parents. With a single cuff that sent the hatchling flying, the matriarch taught Gristle that in the Plaguelands the Right to Rule comes from strength, not blood, and according to that metric the small mirror still left much to be desired.
Furious at the humiliation, Gristle left her clan for the harsh mercies of the wasteland, wandering from oasis to oasis as she fought off disease and hid from predators. She followed the Plague ley lines, sensing them beneath her feet as a tingling heat, though they were undetectable to the heat pits beneath her eyes. She followed them because they were a direction in a directionless land, and because they called to her in a way that she hoped meant that she was special, something she yearned for the outside world to recognize as she herself knew with a burning certainty.
They led her, as they had to lead her, to the Wyrmwound. She stumbled along the rim, made woozy by the vapors that curled around her wings and head crest. The acidic mist made her eyes burn and blur with unshed tears and it was only as she was falling that she realized she had taken a step too far. Before she could hit the cauldron's bile-yellow waters a claw shot over the edge and hauled her back. Her unlikely savior was a pale Imperial, a youth just starting his Necromantic trials. "If you are a sign from Mother you certainly are a small one," he said as she squirmed in his grip.
It was from him that she learned what it meant to be a Necromancer, and at his words the small, yearning thing inside her that told her there was something more thrummed to life at last. She decided to begin her own trials immediately, though she was technically too young, and picked a perch just as close to the Wyrmwound as the proud Imperial. She sat there for 23 days and nights, first succumbing to Mother's infection, which spread along her spine and wings, then surpassing and overcoming it. She demonstrated her power by drawing the Imperial's own infection down to manageable levels, thus repaying her debt and returning a life for a life.
As the last night of her trial burned into the dawn of her 24th day she arose from her perch victorious, the rays of the red sun christening her with her new name, Kishna. She was a Necromancer, and she had come into her power at last.
