Camellia had always felt that strange presence. It was as if she was being hunted, hunted by something that cannot be seen, nor heard. At first, she thought it to be something of her imagination, but then she felt it affecting her family. Sharp, clammy claws were ripping into the very existence of their souls, tearing them to shreds. But she didn’t dare mention anything, for on the outside nothing seemed amiss, and she was the only one who noticed, and was utterly terrified of the possibility of exile if she was deemed a lunatic, solitude was the root of all her nightmares.
Until one tragic day, where her brother, the oldest of their clutch of three, fell deadly ill. The grip on his soul was stronger than ever, and the presence felt especially malicious, she feared for his life. And thus, she told her mother, explained what she had felt since the day she was hatched, but she spoke for deaf ears, and her mother shunned her. She was sent away. Whispers of her being a ‘marked’ one clung to her pelt. A few days later, her brother died.
