DESTINO Flamecaller's Chosen

Destino was born as one of multiple siblings in the Flamecaller’s domain. While his parents and siblings were adorned in colorful patterns, his body and wings were plain, dull almost. Still, Destino never was envious. He was strong, fast, and one of the tallest of the clutch. From many squabbles among the siblings he emerged victorious, and especially his younger siblings looked to him for protection. Destino grew up with confidence in himself and his abilities, but at the same time never used his strength to tower over others. Even as a child and adolescent, he was rather aiding and training the weaker ones than mocking their inferiority. However, as much as Destino seemed to be the perfect leader personality, it also quickly became apparent that he struggled with making decisions. Usually, instead of taking a step back and considering his options, he would rush head-first into any situation that presented itself, and often cause additional troubles for anyone involved. Thus, instead of training him as a future leader of the clan, the adults decided to train him as a warrior and hunter, like his father was.

Dedicated to his new role, Destino committed himself to training. His impulsiveness and pride proved to be his biggest hindrances, however. Various times he barely made it back home after underestimating the opponent. And while Destino was eager to learn from his elders, he could not bring himself to ask for help. In combination, these traits could easily prove fatal, and it is due to Destino’s abilities and a good portion of luck that they haven’t so far. Still, Destino enjoyed his life with the clan and as a hunter, although sometimes, in his lonely moments out in the Ashfall Waste, he got the feeling that there was something else he should be doing, someone else he should be.

One day, when Destino was searching for traces of prey at the foot of the Great Furnace, a voice suddenly broke the silence. It was so deep it shook the earth, but at the same time, its only source seemed to be in Destino’s consciousness. It told him to climb to the top of the Great Furnace, a journey only few dragons had ever attempted and even fewer had returned from, and take an everburning ember from its peak. This ember should be brought back to the Magma Sanctum, to replace the one currently in its core. The voice emphasized that without this ember, the Sanctum would run out of energy and the gods’ access to its findings would be disturbed, leaving Sornieth in a vulnerable position.

“You have been chosen to carry out the will of the Flamecaller. Do not disappoint me.” With this, the sky turned dark for a moment as the Great Furnace spit fire and ashes into the air, before silence fell once more.

Destino did not hesitate a moment. Immediately, he grabbed his bags tighter and started climbing the burning hot rocks. He kept climbing for five days and five nights; his claws were burning, his wings singeing. More than once he lost hold on the parching stone, but he kept moving. Finally, he reached the top, thirsty, hungry, battered. It might have been his imagination, delusional from the exertions his body and mind had endured, but for a split moment, Destino could’ve sworn that he had seen the form of the Flamecaller in the burning flames.

With the last of his strength, he managed to grab the ember he required and lifted off. At first, his beaten wings barely managed to carry him, but all of the sudden, warmth and comfort chased away the burning pain. His wings recuperated, now covered in the starry pattern of the sky. His burned scales fell and made space for new ones, sparkling and bright. With ease, he let the warm winds carry him to the Magma Sanctum and offered the ember to the dragons working there. Just when they set the ember in place, a wave of heat rushed over Destino’s body once more, burning but not painful. In his head, he heard the voice once more:

“You have done well. I choose you to join my side from now to eternity. Go forth, and raise the power of the fire.”

Sparks started to flicker in Destino’s eyes before suddenly, they burst into flames. The Flamecaller had given him the gift of primal sight and thus had chosen him as her demi-god. Destino returned home to his clan, who were both relieved as well as surprised at his return. However, Destino did not stay with them. He left again soon after, but this time to travel the Ashfall Waste and fulfill the will of his new patron.
