The traders found Coal as an abandoned egg, lying alone next to a broken caravan. There was bones stripped clean nearby and they knew no one was coming for the egg. Haniel and Pharzuph looked after it, and were glad to see that the time it spent alone did not kill what was growing inside.

After he hatched, Coal didn't always pay that much attention to the other dragons, often talking to spirits that only Blush and Spill seemed to be able to see. He had no wish to become a shaman and grew up talking to the dead that only Blush knew to be his parents.

Coal often mourned that he had not been able to bury his parents in the place he now called home and took out to fine their bones. When he did he dragged them back to the lair, starting a small graveyard on the edge of the lair. He took Doberge's plants to leave glowing marks where they were buried.

The respect he shows for the dead slowly encouraged others to come to him. Before the clan had normally left their dead out to be scavenged by the local beasts, but now they bring them to Coal, letting him bury and honour each one.

Although he is often alone, other than Impulse, he never truly is. Often the spirits hang around him. Keeping the young dragon company and giving him tips of all sorts. Including on how he should court Impulse.
