“I am prepared to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.”
Darkness and silence slide across the world as I begin my rounds. Many of my regulars are here already, standing outside the tent with eager faces waiting for my advice or my sympathy, my assistance or my mercy. Many dragons have come to me without ever returning to the clan, finding their ways out of my tent through other means. It is not the regulars I spy today, but the new faces. A young tundra, two young guardians. Adults, in their own right, though still so young. They carry nothing with them, whereas the regulars carry their valuables and their currency, looking for my services through material gain though I provide them for free to those who truly need them. I grip tightly to my pearl in one clawed hand while pointing at the young tundra. The crowd gathered parts and the pale young thing walks forward uncertainty, hesitating as if considering the possibility that I had pointed at someone behind him. I let him take his time. It is not often that one is sent to the Icewarden and the undertaking is filled with insecurities. He enters my tent, and I speak the first words of the day to him, out of earshot of any outside the tent I conduct my business in. "There is no need to be frightened of your path." His cold eyes only blink and I settle him down at a table in the center of the tent. It is roomy and empty around us, as the tent must fit dragons many times his size on occasion. My pearl rests on the floor in the crook of my tail as I reach for the proper herbs. "There are many things you must know, and of them all is that serving the Icewarden is the highest honor you will ever achieve. It is not easy, and these secrets I give to you now will only go with you to his claws. When you leave this tent, there will be no more clan, only the Icewarden and his many children." The tundra takes a deep breath, his head tilting and his eyes concerned more than I have seen an ice dragon's look in a long time. "What will happen to me?" "You will go to fight the Icewarden's battles. Or you will tend to his claws and keep them sharp. He needs many dragons to help him. The honor is all yours. Now, open your paws and your ears, there is much we must speak about before you leave this tent to the Icewarden himself." It is not long before I emerge from the tent without the young tundra by my side. No one questions where he has gone, and I offer no answers. The back of my expansive tent remains hidden from the general population and is the exit for those exalted to the Icewarden or those who have become too elderly or ill to continue in our clan. Only myself, my mate Thanatos, and those who have left through that flap alive know of it. My regulars stand inside the tent each week, sometimes each day, with no idea of the gateway hidden so nearby. The crowd has only grown since taking the tundra in and the new faces are lost among a crowd of regulars and old dragons looking for comfort and solace. I offer my tent for the elders before me, taking in two at a time. They want herbs and potions for their aching joints and their brittle bones in this cold winter world. They seek magical remedies to their failing minds. I offer all of these, and more. By noon the birds are in the sky and the crowd has died down. Only a few remain to seek my skills and fortunes, most of them content to lay in the warm sun. I look forward to my afternoon spent with my mate, Thanatos, once I am through with my morning's work.
