Biography

Udyr

Hello. I guard the hoard here. If you steal. I come after you.

Udyr has been with the clan for quite a while. No one is exactly sure how long, however, because he joined the clan in a rather unconventional manner. Though they were still a small clan, they were focused on trying to build the contents of their hoard and treasury, to make sure that their clan would never go hungry. Although the chamber they had appointed for their treasury seemed ambitiously large, they hoped to fill it someday. However, soon they began noticing strange things happening there. Treasure and objects would be moved in the night. Any messes, uncounted piles of coins or gems, would be tidied up, neatly stacked or sorted. Things turned up in it that no one could remember putting there in the first place. And some dragons even swore that they heard someone in there when it should have been empty, moving around, although they found nothing when they went to investigate.

Some suspected thieves, although what kind of thief cleans up and leaves extra behind instead of taking everything? Others suspected that the place was haunted, although it would have to have been a very polite ghost. Some said that nothing was happening, and everyone was just hearing the stories and imagining things. But even they couldn't explain what happened when they saw things had been moved with their own eyes. Putting an extra lock on the treasury door at night didn't seem to stop the strange happenings.

Finally, Nocti herself decided to get down to the bottom of it. She would spend the night in the treasury, and see if she could find the source of the disruption. At dusk, she carried a few pillows in to lie on (some dragons enjoy sleeping on piles of gold, but tundras tend to prefer softer accommodations) and settled down to wait. She settled down so well that she drifted off to sleep, but in the middle of the night, something woke her. She heard the soft clinking of coins being moved, and when she opened her eyes, she saw a strange spiral sitting and counting coins, stacking them neatly. She wasn't quite sure what to say at first, but he hadn't done any harm, and her policy had been never to attack someone who didn't try to hurt her first, so she decided it was best to be polite.

Clearing her throat, Nocti greeted him with a quiet “Hello?” He turned toward her, blinking curiously but otherwise seeming unaffected.
“Hello,” he responded quite cheerfully.
“Can I ask what you're doing here?”
“I'm guarding your hoard.” Another slow blink, as though he was considering what next to say. “It's my charge.”
“Oh, of course.” She had taken stranger things in stride in her time, so why not this? “My name is Nocti, and it's nice to have you as part of the clan?”
“My name is Udyr. Yes, it is. Nice.” He nodded agreeably, and that seemed to settle the matter in his mind, as he went back to counting the coins.

Udyr, despite being a spiral, seems to believe he has the heart of a guardian, and he considers the clan's hoard his charge. A dragon of few words, he chose to join the clan, not by introducing himself and petitioning for entry, but by simply moving into the treasury, protecting his charge. He set to work driving out any thieves who dropped in, organizing and cleaning the place up, and even adding his own bits and pieces of wealth to it. Since spirals like to keep a nocturnal schedule, he'd done most of it at night, to the bafflement of the other clan members who were usually sleeping at the time. Nocti conferred with Yuu, her mate, and Cheyanne and Chrono, the two stand in leaders, and they all agreed that he was practically a member of the clan already, so they might as well make it official.

Most of the dragons of the clan accept Udyr's odd ways. So what if he's not a guardian? If he says he has a charge, he certainly takes care of it well enough. If he has to scrutinize everything they want to take out of the treasury before he'll let them, well, it is his “charge” after all. And if he wants to rearrange it, his way usually is better, even if it takes some time to get used to. However, when LightoftheNorth joined the clan, the pearlcatcher found herself butting heads with the spiral. When she wanted into the treasury to count it, she had to get past him, which involved a lengthy interview, conducted in his odd, laconic way of speaking, to prove she was trustworthy. When she wanted to take treasure out, to make a purchase for the clan, he put up a fuss if there was more than he thought she should be taking, and wanted to know about every coin spent and unspent.

However, the two had to work together no matter how they felt, since LightoftheNorth needed to go in and out of the treasury often when she kept the clan's accounts, and bought and sold goods for them. Udyr learned that if he let LightoftheNorth take treasure out, even if she did spend it, she eventually brought back more than she had spent, and made the treasury grow in the end through her clever management. Meanwhile, LightoftheNorth became more tolerant of Udyr's need for a thorough report on how much treasure was going where, after she caught him sniffling and tearing up at an empty space in the treasury where she'd recently taken money out, and realized just how seriously he took the business of his charge. By proximity if nothing else, they began to develop an odd affection for each other, as they found that their respective interests fit together well. Their relationship is a strange one, since one day Udyr will be seen counting treasure alongside LightoftheNorth happily, and the next day sulking because she overrode his decision to sell a valuable statue he'd wanted to keep. However, no matter how often they butt heads, they keep coming back to each other's company.

Don't touch that. Don't touch anything.
