Sadalmelik

Sadalmelik took after his mother, a scientist; perhaps he was always destined to try these magical experiments. His whole life, he has always felt most comfortable with his nose in a book, turning over a theory in his head, working out solutions to problems. He has unrivaled knowledge of the theory of hybrid magics, most of the research for which he has done himself. On himself.

Arcane magic runs through his veins alongside his natural icy blood. It was a vital experiment for the Roost, and he refused to test it on anybody else. "This is my theory, my creation," he said, "and I refuse to be wrong and harm another with it. If I have made a mistake, I will feel it for myself." So far, he hasn't suffered any noticeable damage from it, but he insists that Alfawaris not test it on another until they truly understand the effects.

Sometimes, his clawtips are numb, and his veins have a strange magenta glow, but beyond that it doesn't appear to be causing any harm. Whether or not it brings out an ability in him to use hybrid magic is another question, and one he is extremely interested in answering.

h i s t o r y

Sadalmelik joined the Roost of Stars because he was intrigued by the way Alfawaris spoke. Rather than hearing the ravings of a lunatic, he heard interesting theories about the magic of the world, and he saw in those theories the potential to make it come true. He was the first to take Alfawaris seriously, and with his intellect, he was able to draw diagrams and create more theories to help the project along. It all came with the same goal: gaining the power of the stars. Alfawaris was the mastermind, but Sadalmelik was the one who made it possible; he is as vital to the Roost as the heart is to a body.

While Sadalmelik is attracted to dangerous experiments, he is also a thorough researcher who knows the importance of careful planning and research. Even before he put Arcane magic into his blood, he knew it wasn't going to harm him -- at least, not immediately. He had no idea what the long-term effects would be going into it; he mostly assumed that he would eventually have to replenish the Arcane energy in his veins, but even that hasn't proven to be true.

Something strange is going on in his veins, and he's determined to find out exactly what it is.

Magic

Cold

The magic running through his veins has never been particularly powerful in comparison to other Ice dragons, but it has some uses. He can cool down small objects, resist the cold, and sometimes even call upon a small flurry of snow, no matter the weather.

Cosmos

Sadalmelik's study of magic and the stars has granted him a deep understanding of how Arcane magic is meant to work, and this understanding can be applied in many areas. Ever since infusing his blood with pure magic, he has gained strange and exciting magical abilities which even he can't properly explain.

Sign of the Sealed Tome

Like Alfawaris, Sadalmelik was born during the Month of Hoarfrost under the constellation of the Sealed Tome. The stars rule that he is intelligent, precise, and doesn't cut corners, but they also say that he may never actually feel fulfilled in the work he does. It will never end.

Blessing of the Dreamer

Satevis has peered into his dreams as she has with all members of the Roost, and manipulated them to give Sadalmelik a boost. His memory ad motor functions are improved by his restful sleep. Sadalmelik is grateful that Satevis is willing to help; he doesn't always sleep soundly.

Connections

Alfawaris

Alfawaris is the one dragon in the world that Sadalmelik would give up his research for. Fortunately, Alfawaris would never ask that of him.

The two of them are kindred spirits, alike in too many ways to count. Their intellectual exchanges are fast-paced and interesting. They always appear to be on the same wavelength, and on some days it even appears as though they can read each other's minds. This is a rare connection, which Sadalmelik intends to keep.

Duncan

They are rarely in touch these days, but Sadalmelik sometimes wonders what became of his father. Before sending him to his new home Duncan gave his son a small tatter of the flag that once flew over the airship. He wears it around his neck with pride, the only badge he has of his family.

He's happy as he is. He made a family for himself. Still, he wonders what would have changed for him if he had been close with his blood relatives, and contemplates sending a letter from time to time.
