.the blessed | builder | high priest of light.

  SUMMARY
Some priests make offerings in food, rituals, and converts. Or gives tribute in restored temples and repaired colonnades, instead.

Zohran's ancient labyrinthine marketplace is habitable due in no small part to his efforts. There are tales of dragons who owe their lives to his strength and ingenuity in fortifying structures which have borne unexpected collapse, naturally followed by rumors that his blessings can turn aside all manner of calamity.

He is constantly at odds with Zohran's governing Council in matters of ethics and mercy. Both he and Laurel, the city's arbiter in chief, act as emergency advocates for the disadvantaged.

  VIGNETTE
The temples of the old city were built in its lowest places, buried and hidden from the sun. Though a few attempts had been made to repair the tapestries, clean the soot from the walls, and polish the great planed stone of the floors, none had succeeded beyond a transient opening of the sacred spaces. Worshippers stopped to pay their respects beneath the broad sweeps of the column-lined market squares and then resumed their trade.

To pay homage to the Lightweaver in Zohran was to beg blessings at the roadside.

She was not the only deity or minor spirit to inhabit these alcoves. As merchants and tradesmen from far-flung lands came to seek their fortunes, it was said that the ancient city was home to more gods than dragons.

Or was the child of one such pair of migrants. They came to Zohran on a whim at the behest of family who had already settled. For the first time in many centuries, the otherwise scattered Lightgems had begun to scrape out a home. While his parents drank tea in a low parlor and gossiped about the money to be made in silk, Or was left to run with the other hatchlings in complex games ranging throughout the interlocking passageways.

It was well known that criminals in Zohran were subject to the justice meted out jointly between the mercenaries of Late Lights company and the newly formed city guard. Criminal acts were accompanied by swift judgment and fearsome consequences, one of which was rumored to be work duty excavating ruins in the Hewn City. Few dared this punishment, so the hatchlings were allowed to roam with an unusual freedom.

Although Or knew in some sense what it meant to be a Lightgem, he had no concept of the community beyond the stories. Of Helene, who made the finest armor with enamel and gold, or of Agate, a fiery veteran said to have defeated more than a hundred foes in single combat. His playmates gleamed with light and life, their smoke-strewn wings marking them as inheritors of yet undiscovered gifts.

Weeks passed as they played at being their heroes while they ran through the streets, fought great battles, subdued emperors, and befriended centaurs and the other beastmen who lurked beyond the city walls.

During one of these games, Or chased a young guardian beneath a cracked stone arch and wriggled mightily to reach the other side. He was at an age when his body was never the same length from day to day, so that he underestimated his size and lodged, panting, with his shoulders stuck on one side of the doorway and his wings pinioned by confining rock.

No amount of struggling was able to aid him in advance or retreat.

The other hatchlings loudly debated the merits of finding a stonemason when, with a murmured prayer to Lightweaver and a surrender to fate, Or found his way through into a vaulted chamber that had been hidden behind fallen stone.

A nameless peace yet lingered in the buried and forgotten hall. The ingenious internal system of mirrors and wall sconces that would once have lit the temple during all hours was blocked by collapsed mortar and the ruin of time.

In that moment he yearned to lift the gloom, to see the vaults illuminated as they must have been in the time of the ancients.

  NOW
Or went on to be educated in the temples of Zohran and to serve the Lightweaver and Zohran's many gods by reopening and rebuilding their houses. He is called "the blessed" not for this work in itself, but rather for the discoveries of ancient art and knowledge he's uncovered as a consequence of his efforts. He is expert in ancient building methods, modern construction techniques, and the glyphs of the civilization which once inhabited the city in ages past.

He leads widely-attended nondenominational solstice observances and, while his devotion to the Lightweaver is plain, he is a servant of Light in the general sense and philosophy of the flight's most dearly held tenets rather than a dogmatic evangelist. He further serves as an intercessor on behalf of those who have fallen afoul of Zohran's laws and famously punitive justice system.
