Biography
Carmel was born on the night her father died. Which makes the fact that her father is alive somewhat... interesting.
What happened was an administrative mix-up, a deadly Hunger Games set in a treacherous desert, and a young, brilliant Fae called Carmelita.
When Finglas died in the Bloodbath of the Fifth Arcane Hunger Games, his clan-mate Carmelita (who until that point had entered solely for the purpose of proving her strength before The Ambassador came to take her to the Arcanist) took it upon herself to save him somehow. After seven days of pain, thirst, death and struggle, Carmelita became the first member of Clan Balmoral to win the Arcane Hunger Games.
But that didn't bring Finglas back.
In a brave and perhaps foolish attempt to right the wrongs of the Games, Carmelita confronted The Ambassador when they came to collect Finglas and demanded that she take her rightful place in the entourage of the Arcanist. After long debate (mostly with Finglas) Carmelita got her way, and proceeded to ascend to the Arcanist's side, restoring Finglas to his corporeal form.
When Finglas was returned to Clan Balmoral's lair, he found three tiny Faes awaiting him. One of them, Carmel, had eyes that were too knowing, too old, to belong to a three-hour-old hatchling. He recognised her instantly; Carmelita had found a way to keep an eye on her old clan.
Carmel, daughter of a Guardian and a Fae, and the reborn incarnation of one of the bravest Faes to ever pass through Clan Balmoral, takes her role of "keeping an eye on things" very seriously. Driven by her mother's blood, she keeps watch over the whole tribe with the help of Majestas and the other Guardians. As she has grown, she has learned to utilise her unique connection to a transcended dragon in order to become the High Priestess of the clan. She governs all of the ceremonies of worship to the Arcanist, is the conduit through whom the Ambassador speaks to choose whom to exalt to the Arcanist's side, and is the confessionary and counsellor of the clan.
Sometimes she dreams of a great library full of rustling paper and rustling wings, of a telescope that stretches for miles, of a bend in reality that glows with pink-and-purple light where knowledge pours in colours that have no name through the gaps in time...
... but surely those are only dreams.
