M O O N R A C E R
broodmother

Everyone knows that they care for a charge, a sacred duty of protection; but what they don't often say is the charge may not be a 'thing' at all - rather, an ideal, a concept.

In Moonracer's case, the thing she holds to above all others is a simple truth: Hatchlings represent hope for the future, a sacred light. They deserve to be protected at any cost.

It doesn't matter whose children they are - her own, those of her clan, those she encounters in her travels or those who wander across her path.

She is compelled to protect them all - to lead them, guide them - to help them realize their true natures.

---

Kelsus always spoke with the air of someone accustomed to being listened to. It was hard for Moonracer to hide the smile; the truth was that her leader was young, barely an adult in the guardian's eyes, and it took everything in Moonracer's power not to smooth back the pearlcatcher's hair and shield her from danger.

"I know you have lived in this clan a long time, Moonracer - longer even than I have been in power. And you know that I don't take membership in Clan Yulon lightly. Every member here must pull their weight and earn their keep."

Moonracer's brows lifted.

"Kelsus," she said, with a hint of a smile. "Are you asking me to stay?"

The young new clan leader looked taken aback; for a moment, she was silent.

"There is nowhere I would rather be, of that I assure you. I have been here all my life, tending to nests. As long as I live, if there are hatchlings to watch over, then that's what I'll do."

---

As the den mother of Clan Yulon, Moonracer has plenty of little ones to keep her occupied. There are her own hatchlings, of course - sharing the blood of the clan's other brood mother, Mirage.

And there are the children of her clan mates, and those hatchlings who have come their way through other odd circumstances - the lost, the orphaned, the unwanted.

All are taken under Moonracer's wing, and raised as her own to be the best of her ability. She feels she owes them that much.

Overhead, the moon was a pale sliver that hung high in the sky. Without its light, the stars shone brighter, seemingly filling the heavens with their brightness, and Mirage lay upon her back to gaze at them.

It was quiet tonight. The hatchlings were asleep, nestled cozily in nests or huddled together in messy tangles of wings and tails.

Beside her, Moonracer snored gently, curled into a defensive pose, tip of tail beneath her chin and claws grasping for someone who was no longer there. The hollow made by her body matched Mirage's shape and size perfectly, and she considered crawling back into the empty space and falling asleep once more.

But the thoughts churning through her head had pulled her from bed, and she knew better than to think she could return to sleep easily. Not until the restlessness had faded; not until the memories had quieted.

And so she lay there, gazing at the stars, allowing the whitecap tides of memory to break against the shores of her thoughts.

--

Not every night was sleepless for the mirror, but many of then had been.

Sometimes, it was the memories - those flashes of an old life, the path she had walked under a different name and with different expectations.

But often enough, it was the sleeplessness of the others that roused her. She was a light sleeper, trained with a soldier's habits from her old life. Moonracer, too - though she could seemingly sleep through an earthquake sometimes, her ears seemed tuned to the cries of a hatchling. Many a night had sent the two of them, jolting awake, to check on the littleones.

They had seen so many of them grow up, comforted so many through nightmares. They had learned so many of their secrets.

Hafwen, and her nightmares of the Emperor; the way her nightly cries of terror had slowly begun to fade. The way she clung to Moonracer in the night as the broodmother tried to quiet her fears.

Asmin, with her angry and unanswered questions.

Moonracer knew the answers.

Baixuan, and her fears of loneliness and abandonment. Her tendency to work too hard, and befriend too few. The way she turned to Mirage for advice, and the way Mirage hoped it was not so obvious that they had so much in common.

--

Moonracer became aware of her mate's absence slowly, the draft against her body gently tugging her from sleep. Her brow furrowed before one eyelid lifted, and then she was fully roused, rolling up to her feet and briefly stretching her wings as she tried to stem back a yawn.

"Mirage?" She called, softly, to the mirror whose scales glinted in the starlight.

She padded to her, nudging her shoulder in greeting. "Can't sleep?"

Mirage shook her head. Moonracer didn't need to ask about the cause of her insomnia. Indeed, she asked nothing; the two sat together in amiable silence, staring up at the stars - sharing a moment, and the memory of a hundred such moments in their past together.

Moonracer knows, all too well, that there are things in her mate's past that she does not know, may never know. But she does not pry. They do not concern her. Here - now - is her only concern.

And on the balance, the moment is happy. The mirror lays her head on the guardian's shoulder and heaves a contented sigh, tension leaving her body as troubled memories, for the moment at least, are of no concern.
