Doane always felt the urge to explore. In the days after he hatched, he already tried to climb the tree his nest was built in, just to see the world beyond. When he was old enough to leave his nest, he got lost many times in the tall grass surrounding his parents' lair. It got much worse after he had learned to fly. As he grew older, he dreamed of leaving his family to see the world.

Not a year before Doane's birth, a small group of Mirror refugees from the Scarred Wasteland settled down near his parent's lair. Together with other wind clans living in the area they helped their new neighbors building up a good home. As soon as Doane was old enough, his parents visited their Mirror friends together with him. Doane loved the stories they told of their homeland and he found his best friend ever since, the Mirrors' first wind-born girl, Odea, who was his age.

Whenever they met, they played hide-and-seek for hours in the thick bamboo forest surrounding Odea's lair. Odea always won. It took Doane a long time to figure out her secret: she could sense his body heat. Doane was mad at her for not telling him and they had their first fight, but Doane was fast to forgive and it was forgotten quickly. But they never played hide-and-seek again.

When Doane grew older, he stoped meeting Odea to go on journeys with friends from the other clans, mostly Skydancers. His parents always allowed him to leave, as long as the group was big enough to keep everyone safe within. Sometimes Odea was with them, too, but she never enjoyed flying as much as the others. Doane loved it, although he had more and more difficulties keeping up with his group, since all his friends grew so much bigger than he did. He always felt better when Odea was around. She was different, too. When she was not there, he sometimes had a strange feeling. Did he ... miss her?

Time passed and Doane started spending time with Odea again. She didn't feel well in her family and he felt lost among his frieds who now used to fly out for days. Doane had no chance of keeping up with them anymore. Odea was not interested in flying at all, she preferred to run, and she was the fastest runner, Doane had ever seen. She carried him on her back to places he had only seen from above and while she went off hunting, Doane explored the area collecting anything, that looked interesting.

It was no surprise for his parents to hear Doane fell in love with Odea. He barely spent his days at home anymore. His mother was still afraid to see him leave, thinking the world outside was too dangerous for such a small fae without the protection of a large group, but Doane always felt safe with Odea around. One day, they discovered a cave underneath the roots of a dead tree, big enough for a fully grown guardian to fit in. By the time they entered the cave they both knew they would never return home.

In the days after their discovery, both worked hard to make the small cave their new home. While Odea went off to gather the necessary materials, Doane prepared and cleaned the inside. It was no easy time and when they were done, Odea got sick. It was no severe disease, but Doane was afraid of not beeing able to feed her, since she could no longer hunt. Everything Doane could catch for her were Zephyr Sparrows and a few inattentive mice.

Odea's sickness turned out to be no sickness at all. When Doane returned from hunting one evening, he found Odea sitting at the entrance of the cave, completely healthy again and with the biggest smile on her face. Confused, Doane followed her inside. The leaves and feathers she had used as a bed before were huddled together in a corner. She carefully moved some of them away and revealed two the eggs she had laid! It was the happiest day in all of Doane's life. He enjoyed guarding the eggs the next day, so Odea could finally go hunting again.

His wings had just the size to cover both eggs, he didn't know what he would have done, if there were three... One of them was bigger than the other. He wondered how their children would look like. When Odea returned, she was strangely silent Doane asked her what happened and she told him her story how she ended up in the Wandering Contagion. "I found it under the rotting corpse of some big animal, it would have died out there!", were her last words. Then she opened her satchel and pulled out a slimy, stinking green egg.

Odea placed the egg in their improvised nest and kept them warm during the night. Only a few hours after Doane had fallen asleep on Odea's back, she woke him up again. The orphan egg had started to move slightly! At first, the movement was barely visible, growing slightly stronger with each minute passed. When dawn was near, it suddenly stopped moving. That was, when something started beating against the shell from the inside. A small blue claw hacked its way through ans soon after, the eggshell broke in half.

The little Tundra's big red eyes were the cutest thing, Doane had ever seen before. The first egg had hatched, and although it was not his own, Doane felt proud.
