That just divides the desert from the sown, Where name of Slave and Sultan scarce is known, And pity Sultan Mahmud on his Throne …“. -Omar Khayyám, Rubáiyát. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() Barstow was once a king, before his kingdom fell to ash. He’s known the desert ever since he was a hatchling, a young dragon full of wanderlust on the edge of a city that was built from the sand. The prospect of being king never interested him, but he was always fascinated by the whispers that came from his walls. It was known as the Whispering City — every home that had been built from the sand had its own voice. The dragons that lived there were slowly driven mad, but not Barstow. The voices were his friends. It was an experimental city built by his father, and by the time Barstow became king, there was no one left to rule. Only an empty city with buildings slowly crumbling back into the sand from which they were made. Barstow took this opportunity, taking what he could carry on his back and venturing further into the desert, becoming one of the Nomads. He learned their culture, their way of life. He was surprised to find that they’d all hated his city, a blemish on their beautiful desert, holding souls hostage within their walls. Souls that were meant to be free. The kindness within him made Barstow’s heart ache — he hadn’t known that souls had been trapped in the walls of the city, no wonder they’d driven out all of the dragons. He made a point to return to the place, and took it upon himself to demolish every last building, setting the souls free to be carried by the wind of the desert. |
