Breed Change: Guardian

"What now?" Tallulah asked, eyeing the scroll her mate had laboriously written - and illustrated, it seemed? - this time.

Shadefall gave her a flat sare, as if he meant to say, You really should have learned how this is supposed to go by now.

"This is…" The earthy matriarch squinted. There was a clumsy drawing that took up most of the parchment that looked vaguely reminescent of a Guardian dragon, with various runes and incantations scribbled inside and outside the lines. "Where do I even begin?"

An ink-stained claw indicated the appropriate place. Tallulah looked up at her mate, who eyed her expectantly. There, his eyes said as his claw poked the parchment a few more times. There, and there, and finally there.

Tallulah hesitated. She felt rather wary, after the business with the other scroll. Still, she loved her mate. Very much. Enough to indulge him in whatever it was that he hoped to achieve this time. She cleared her throat - not that she needed it - then began to read.

The incantation took a long time. Unlike the last scroll, this one didn't spawn any tendrils of light, and neither did her mate's coloring alter in any way that she could see. Towards the end, she wondered if she was reading it correctly.

As the last sillable rolled off her serpentine tongue, the great Mirror dragon began to write on the ground, his body changing at a frightening pace. His open maw shortened, his long, bat-like wings stretched further, and twin horns sprouted in place of the leathery crown on his head. When it was finished, he looked nothing like the dragon he had been.

Tallulah couldn't believe her eyes. Shadfall looked like - no, he was - a Guardian. Like her.

Although he looked like he was still in some pain, Shadefall looked at her lovingly. I love you this much, his eyes seem to say.

Heart singing, she replied, "I love you, too."

Tri-Color Scatterscroll

Tallulah held the scroll at a distance between two large claws, as if afraid something might pop out of the weathered parchment and bite her. The scroll was covered by scribbles and diagrams; some were crossed out, other circled in bright red. She squinted. Some of it made sense - kind of. Most of it didn't. "You want me to read this aloud?"

Shadefall nodded. He seemed on the verge breaking into a fit of soundless chuckles. For a dragon so dignified and reserved, this was highly unusual.

Tallulah squinted "Are you sure?"

Another nod.

The Guardian sighed. "All right… here goes."

The air changed as Tallulah began to read. It wasn't so much seen as felt, arcane tendrils slithering from the parchment to envelop the Mirror who had created it. Wherever they touched his scales, their color began to change. His lavender-colored body became a darker shade of emerald. His earthy wings, the shade of the lair's stone walls, lightened until they became a shimmering grey. Ashen dust fell all around him when he reared back and shook his great body, glinting a deep green in the flickering light.

Little Orsi, their first and only hatchling so far, peered curiously from behind one of her mother's hind legs once the transformation was over, then bobbled over and cuddled against her father. She let out a content little chirp. Regardless what her mother might have been thinking, this hatchling certainly approved.

"Well," Tallulah said, a little surprised. "That was certainly… unexpected. And reckless. What if it had backfired? What if you'd been stuck with a coloring so ridiculous-"

Shadefall shrugged, gave a soundless chuckle, then went off to admire himself in the crystal mirror carved into the cave wall. Tallulah may not have said as much, but she'd seen the way she was trying to supress a smile. She liked it, and little Orsi liked it too. Such unexpectedly good results for an experiment he hadn't even been entirely sure would work.
