"...a beautiful sight, we're happy tonight, walking in a winter wonderland."

No one knows precisely where Karel comes from. Her eyes and frigid powers tell that she originally came from somewhere in the Southern Icefield, but warriors of Clan Arkatek came upon her on an expedition to the northern ends of the Starfall Isles. That initial encounter ended with several dozen frozen mithsicles, an irate Void with her talons stuck in ice blocks (and many chuckles amongst the other Arkatek warriors), and a fleeing Karel.

She nursed a grudge against the dragons who’d bested her, and followed them back to their lair, where she petulantly decided to use her Cryomantic powers to snow them all in. So for several days, in the middle of summer, there was a snowstorm that completely covered the area around the Arkatek Lair. But creating such a blizzard taxed her to the extreme, and she collapsed. It was not until Elseif ventured out to replenish medicinal reagents at last, nearly a week later, that she found the unconscious dragon, and brought her in to be nursed back to health.

Needless to say, some dragons were… less than enthusiastic about having her in the lair - even more after she’d spent some time there – but Elseif at least was insistent. So, she was allowed to stay, so long as she didn’t cause any more trouble than Lore…

So far, she’s behaved rather well… for her at least. As a favour to Elseif, she’s refrained from freezing too many dragons. And she hasn’t had that many temper tantrum snowstorms. Though, a large part of this self-control has had to do with her creation of Instance. Using many of the tomes in the Archives, she researched a spell to give life to her meticulously carved replica of a coatl – the breed chosen because Data tolerated the cold in her workstation enough to be a model for her. Much of her energy has gone into first the artistry, then the research, and then finally the teaching of her creation. It is only now when she realizes that she doesn’t have a whole lot to keep herself occupied…

Her relationship with Instance is a strange one. On the one hand, she holds his very existence in her… claws, able to end him in an instant if she so chooses. That in itself creates a drastic power imbalance. On the other hand, he is also the being that she trust the most, and can open up to him in ways she doesn’t think she could to any other dragon. It’s still taking some time for her to become completely comfortable with him, and he with her. But such things need to grow organically. Even now, not even Instance knows her deepest, secret passion… singing.
