Balur Hifar
Born to a plague clan in the wyrmround, Balur has never felt in touch with his ancestry. Preferring beauty over plague, and peace over discord, he was considered an oddity among his peers. This put him on the outside of his clan, and eventually he was forced to leave. He was considered weak, maybe not in stature but in resolve. His hesitance and eventual refusal to spread the contagion ostracized him from his clan. He left without trouble, but a part of him was glad to be able to find his own place in the world.Rough diamonds may sometimes be mistaken for worthless pebbles. Balur came to Madina under the pretense that he was seeking beauty. He had little in the way of practical skill, but he got by doing odd jobs around the city. He found his true calling when he made a delivery to a jeweler near the port. The crystal gems fascinated him, and he could hardly tear his gaze away. He begged the jeweler for tutoring in the craft, promising that he'd help out in exchange for tutelage. He was eager, and the man agreed to teach him what he knew. For years Balur studied under him, learning to set stones into intricate settings and make beautiful jewelry. He was proud of his work, and his skill increased greatly under the watchful gaze of the old man. When the time came, he passed the business on to Balur, trusting his judgement and skill to keep it alive. Balur promised not to disappoint him, and the shop flourished under his care. His unique touch drew dragons from all over the city, as well as from outside the city, to see his craft. One particular day the most beautiful dragon Balur had ever seen entered his shop. Though she acted humble, he could sense she was not his average customer. She spoke softly and courteously, and Balur was quite quickly smitten with her. The young woman must have had the patience of a saint, or perhaps he really was just that persistant, because she allowed him to attempt to court her with what means he had. He lavished her in beautiful gifts and sweet words, and quickly the two fell deeply in love. Today Balur and Celene run the jewelry makers in the port of Madina. Their skill is widely considered some of the best, and they make quite the living off their wares. Celene's family provides excellent gemstones for Balur's work, and Celene provides his inspiration. |
