Bio
"The sky is your best friend... you only have to give it the chance."

History

The sound of coins clinking was the first thing to break the awful silence for months. So foreign was the noise that it was almost painful to the ears. August had spent the last... how many years had it been? He had been caged in the dark as the coveted prize of the local clan's leader for more years than he could count.

He remembered competing in a race held between several clans as a show of peace. He was quick on his wings and easily outpaced even the more properly trained racers of the more wealthy clans. One of the lords whose champion he had best had expressed a desire to congratulate the victor in person. August had accepted the voluntary summons and presented himself to the patriarch with modest pride.

"You are fast for having no official training," the dragon lord acknowledged with a tilt of his head. "I hear you did not represent a clan during the race. Why is this?"

"I was born alone, your grace," August explained. It no longer bothered him to face such a truth. The pain of loneliness had long since lost its sting. "I hatched on an open cliff with not a soul around me. No parents. No clan. I've come to accept the life of an outsider."

The dragon lord said nothing for a moment. Then he said, "I would have you as a member of my clan. Train with my kinsman. Learn to race properly if that is your calling."

"With all due respect, my lord... I fear I must decline your generous offer. Clan life has no appeal to me. I need nothing but the wind in my wings."

The patriarch sighed heavily, then frowned and flicked his head towards the guards on either side of his roost. The pair of larger dragons easily pinned down the small pearlcatcher, holding him in place while a third dragon approached. Metal chinked and clattered as heavy casts were locked around his neck, wings, and legs. August fought to free himself, but he was no match for his opponents.

"I did offer an alternative," he heard the dragon lord's voice echoing behind him as he was dragged away and locked in a dark, windowless cell. "At least now I can say I have the fastest dragon in Sornieth, and you can no longer best my champion. You will be fed and watered twice a day."

Now, years in the future, the sound of money changing hands set August's nerves on end. At least, he thought it was money, but soon he wasn't so sure as something heavy hit the dirt outside with a loud thud. The sickly sweet smell of blood filled his cell, but his concern for whatever had happened to the dragon outside was soon replaced by concern for himself as his cell rocked and slid as if it was being dragged onto something.

Several minutes of stablility passed, then the world lurched alarmingly and the sound of large wings reached his ears. August liked flying, but he wasn't sure if this counted. It made his stomach roll and his the butterflies flit frantically in his gut along with it. The pearlcatcher hissed anxiously and crouched down to the floor of his cell, feeling the comforting warm of his pearl against his belly as his scales touched it where it lay beneath him.

After what seemed like an eternity, he felt his cell being set on solid ground again. Large paws padded on the earth outside and then the horrible sound of claws on metal rang through confines like a bell. August seized his pearl and pressed himself into the corner of the cell, his eyes fixed on the wall the sounds were coming from. Finally, with an enormous crash, the wall fell away in a billowing cloud of dust. When the debris cleared, the large head of a golden imperial moved into view. His green eyes glinted in the moonlight as he peered in at the smaller dragon cowering before him.

"You've had it rough, hmm?"

August said nothing.

"You have every right to be nervous," the imperial continued gently. "But I promise no one here will hurt you. You don't have to come out now. Take your time."

The imperial moved out of August's view without another word. After several minutes, the young pearlcatcher worked up the courage to inch out into fresh air, squinting slightly even under the pale light of the night sky. The imperial was lounging on a hilltop a few paces away, his face turned toward the heavens. August inhaled sharply when he finally noticed the much larger dragon and clutched his pearl tighter still.

"Well now," the imperial chuckled, turning his head to look back at August. Several scars caught the light of the moon as his body moved to compensate the motion. "Isn't that better? Come now, I won't hurt you. My name is Ornstein."

"A-august..." Caustiously, August crept closer to his enormous companion. "Where are we?"

"The Loft, Ornstein said, smiling as several bolts of lightning flashed across the sky. "In the land of Lightning. Silly name, I think. Sounds more like we should be in Wind territory, but here we are... living in a perpetual thunderstorm."

"Why did you bring me here?"

"Our matriarch is a benevolent creature. Full of love and kindness for others. Somehow word reached her ear of what had happened to you. As the captain of her guard, she entrusted me to see you here safely. Whether or not you stay is entirely up to you."

August blinked in surprise, then looked up as another bolt of lightning sprung to life and faded away. He dropped his gaze once it was gone and looked out over what Ornstein had referred to as 'the Loft.' It was surprisingly green and lush for being so close to the Tempest Spire. Here and there he could see the faint outline of a dragon moving about in the night or the soft glow of a fire.

It was peaceful.

Enticing.

"I want to stay but...won't they come for me? You killed one of their kinsmen and stole their leader's prize."

"They might," Ornstein admitted with a frown, but he expression soon became one of comfort as he looked down at August. "The Loft protects its own. If you stayed, you would be one of us. We would protect you with our lives if needed."

August looked down at his pearl, contemplating. "I want to help however I can. I'm not a great fighter, but I'm fast. I'm quiet. I could help watch the borders as a scout maybe. I mean... if that's okay."

"That's not for me to say." The great golden imperial heaved himself to his feet. "Only our matriarch can make that decision, but if you truly wish to stay I am sure she would work with you to find the best job suited to your skills. Come, I will take you to her."

August watched as his scarred guardian paced down the grassy hill to the home's inner reaches. He knew what he wanted now. Hugging his pearl to his chest, he loped after his companion to meet the lady of the Loft.

Personality

August is a bit shy and standoffish due to his history, but he has a fierce love for his new home. He would never betray it. Newcomers to the clan have a hard time approaching him due to his suspicion and mistrust of those he doesn't know, but those that do get to know him find he is a kind soul with a love for games and adventures.

August is a Gen 3 dragon.
