Distant Thunder, Rain Of Steel

Thunderous hooves, the straining of sinew and the tension of tendon. The smell of leather and salt sweat. Reins and buckles creaking beneath steel gauntlet clutch; dust rose behind them like a conjured storm. A summons to war, and carrion crows rode high on the drafts of the dust-wind behind them. Excitement was electric, the bloodlust of the riders and their mounts contagious, fuelling the fever of their frenzied gallop across cracked and bonebleached earth. There may be little magic left in the bleeding earth, but there was magic to be found still in the spark of iron-shod hooves against the stone, and in the powerful coil of the mount beneath him.

Fire surged, flames crackling and searing at skin, burning through leather and steel plating. A relentless heat, radiating from the thick neck and broad chest of the destrier. To command a horse of war was to command destruction, bred from the blood and bones and bravery of bygone gods.

It was good to ride again.

As the company crested a last ridge Cain called them up short, hooves scuffing across the cracked clay. Below, the dried river valley curled and ran panoramic from a horizon crested by the jagged shadow of mountains, out across the ghosts of old forests, until it bled its last poisonous veins into the salt seas far to the north. The eastern basins, lowlands and bayous still housing the remnants of forests. A maze of treacherous waters and winding pathways of rivers all threading their way through one another, the last divide between the wastes and the high defenses of the walled coast city of Karth. But before that, on the banks of the toxic river, cloaked in the toxic fumes of the marsh fogs, the deepmoor haven city Myracc lay docile and quiet. And encamped along its banks, the fires of their many cooking pits waving the scent of woodsmoke high over the valleys, the diplomatic entourage of Arciel Court and their Praetorian Guard company hasten to assemble their defenses.

“Let them scurry,” Cain called to his host. There came the soft scattering of laughter along the ranks.

“Like rats,” Merrik murmured from behind him, to another brief ripple of shared amusement. Cain ignored it; it was good their spirits were high.

“To work, then,” he ordered. “We hold the line until the Warchief’s word. Do not break from vigil.”
