ASMODEUS the Gatekeeper

Wolves At the Gates, a Monster at the Door

Behind her, the massive iron doors swung closed with a long groan and a heavy shudder. Once again the caverns were plunged into impenetrable darkness, the torch in her small hand swallowed by the heaviness of the air down here.

Incense clotted the air in her nostrils, sickly sweet sandalwoods and cedars, their scent heavier than blood and pierced only by the shrill note of balsam. As the darkness settled in her eyes, the low violet flames licking across the oil surface of massive bronze incense basins revealed themselves. Fragrant smoke curled up from them, the faint light they cast small and hardly enough to guide the hazardous way across the cracked stone floors.

A blinding flash of flame burst up from deep within the earth, casting the massive caverns in a bath of brilliant orange. For an instant, they revealed the hidden shape of this isolated world of heat and shadow, the relics of ancient forge mechanisms and the chains of lost industry embedded within the stone.

“What do you want, Meena?”

“Rude.”

She kicked at a massive rusted chain lying across her path. The links were larger than her head, barely rattled by her show of irreverence.

Draped across his throne of warped bones and twisted metal, he smirked at her from behind a clawed hand, his elbow propped against the armrest. The only thing fully visible of him in the shroud of nauseating smoke and darkness was the piercing blue of his eyes, glowing with a dangerous flint of boredom.

Meena picked her way carefully through the cracks and vents and loose chains until she stood at the base of the rise to his self-styled throne. There she stopped, her hands planted on her hips, her feet planted in the sea of half-charred and crumbling bones covering the floor.

“Trust you to take up shop in a garbage heap.” She glared up at him, sweltering under the padded shoulders of her leather half-jacket. "It's boiling in here, is it always this hot?"

The Lord of Helle dropped his hand to the bowl of strawberries next to him, plucking at and examining each berry for judgement, and dropping them back into the bowl.

But it was only possible to ignore the physical manifestation of persistent irritation standing in front of him for so long, her hip dropped and her mouth full of chewing gum.

“What do you want, Meena?”

Old enough to remember the Gods, Asmodeus is the most powerful of the demons Morwyn has Called through the veil. Aloof and arrogant, in hell he is among the most affluent of higher Archdemons, a Lord of Seals. Ultimately, he serves only himself, unbound to the Morvales like a lesser demon would have been, but not even a Prince of Hell dare draw the fury of the leader of the Morvales.

Frequently in cohorts with the strange and unpredictable Meena, his machinations have so far been in line with the tasks assigned to him by the Morvales. In hell he commanded great forces of lesser demons; here he is considerably less well-staffed, but he is still trusted with command of his own unit of warriors when the Wehr engages in battle. His strategic counsel is kept and valued by Lanthanum, as is his advice in more delicate and political matters.

For the moment, an allegiance with the enigmatic Lanthanum serves best his own personal motives. Besides, amongst all of her acquaintances, only Asmodeus seems to know of her true origins. And only Asmodeus dares to openly and brazenly label himself her friend.
