B I O G R A P H Y
A shy and awkward young dragon, Janus found more comfort in Sergei as an intermittent adopted parent than with the other guardians – and they quickly learned to give him his space. He sought out a teacher and exploring companion in Brennus and together they would make trips into the surrounding areas to gather information and experiences. Janus grew up content in his loneliness. Still, it was always with wonder and longing that he watched the relationship between the other Guardians and their Charges: the deep love between Astrophei and Alcyone, the affectionate care Romulus took of the large iridescent pearl he always carried with him*, and the devotion of Hanji to Clan Norrsken itself. Though he had not yet reached the age when a Guardian seeks out its charge, he became determined to get his hands on a scroll. He worked for nearly a year before he was able to save the treasure, but his belief that this is what would make him whole never wavered. There was something so important in the knowledge – the promise – that someday that kind of pure and natural relationship would be his. When a Guardian comes of age, it instinctively seeks out a charge to protect for the rest of its considerable life. – Janus had read these words so often that the book’s spine was cracked and the pages worn thin with handling. His coming of age had come and gone and though he was still not close to the other Guardians of the clan it was clear to him that something had gone horribly wrong. Since his transformation he had withdrawn even further from the clan, no longer exploring with Hrafn, no longer seeking Sergei out on his infrequent returns. Some days he would still daydream about finding his Charge – something that completed his soul – but usually he wrapped himself in loneliness and enjoyed the feeling of being just with himself. No charge. No family. No clan. Somehow he was happy in his loneliness. font] |

It was such a long night, and for once Janus felt unmoored. He knew why he had fled, he had read enough to recognize the overwhelming urge to protect his Charge. Unable to return to the clan both out of fear for his safety and out of shame, he slowly destroyed every item he carried. First his glasses, a gift from Sergei. Then his jewelry, carefully chosen and cherished. His clothes. Trinkets from his pockets. A letter from his one-time mate, long gone. He destroyed all of it, but he still could not go back. “I am Janus.” He wrote in the dust, unable to see in the darkness. “And my Charge is myself.” Brennus was the one to find him the next day, of course, surrounded by crushed stone, ruined paper, and torn fabric. Taken aback, the Spiral guided him home. It took a long time before Janus was able to speak about it, to explain his seeming cowardice, but eventually he did. For the first time he sought out Astrophel, not for guidance, but as a teacher in self-defense. He needed to learn to protect his Charge, especially since if he could not protect his Charge he could not protect his clan. |
