Playful | Courageous | Powerful

Runes first memory is of the Wyrmwound. The heat, the smell, the very feeling of all that life and death. Her body was scarred from birth, her forehead sported a plague rune was carved into her scales, her eyes were a blood red, and her scales an ugly shade of gold. Green scar-like ridges covered her body, moving across her skin as if they were alive. Her limbs were the worst affected. Her bones jutted out of her skin, tearing her protective scales and allowing infection to eat away at them. She heard whispers from the dragons that saw her, the sad eyes that stared at her body as they passed.

"The poor thing must have fallen in" They murmured in their groups "The parents probably abandon the egg"

Still it didn't stop her from seeking company, she was young and full of energy, comments were not going to bring her down. It wasn't until she was talking to another hatchling from a nearby lair she discovered how different she truly was. The hatchlings eyes grew wide as she mentioned the infection in his tail. She could see the dots of the virus taking hold of his scales, he would probably lose it if it wasn't treated soon. Rhune could see it eating at his life force, colour that came off him in waves starting to be tainted by the disease. He started crying, his mother coming over quickly, staring in shock as Rhune repeated herself to him.

"You're mad" She growled, "he looks fine, he hasn't even been near to the wyrmwound yet" She scooped up the boy and took him back to her lair. She never saw him again, she did see his mother once, weeping quietly amongst others. She avoided her.

Rhune learnt to fend for herself quickly, living in the Plagubringer’s shadow was tough, even tougher without a large clan to help. As soon as she came of age she made her way to the Plaguebringer’s court, falling at her feet, pledging her life to her.

The room fell silent as the Plaguebringer assessed the young dragon in front of her. A sharp claw caressed her chin, forcing the mirror to meet her deity's eyes.

"My child" She spoke, her voice rough like gravel "You can do more for my cause on your own" Confusion swept across Rhune's features, she opened her mouth to speak but was hushed by the giant in front of her. "Go." The Plaguebringer commanded "Show the world that plague is not just destruction" With that the god dismissed her, watching as Rhune turned to leave the court. The mirror was stopped by an exalted guard, they bent down to her level and murmured a single sentence in her ear.

"There is a home for you in the east" They winked and returned to their position, leaving Rhune with a direction to start her new life.

It took weeks to cross the wasteland. Her infected limbs becoming worse as she endured the harsh terrain. The land began to respond to her, the fleshy tendrils that crossed the land moved for her, freeing a path for her when she walked, capturing prey as she hunted. As she spent more time in the wasteland she became more aware of aspect of her power she had never seen in the wyrmwound. She could not only see plague born creatures and disease, she could control and mutate them. The green ridges on her started to be more responsive to her will, the pointed tips turning sharp like daggers, her own body evolving into a weapon. The only part that did not change in wasteland were her diseased limbs. She could not control the infection like she could others, she could only watch as it spread further, shifting into a more aggressive virus.

Rhune neared the edge of the wandering contagion, the shadow lands coming into view. It had taken her weeks but she was now at the eastern border of the wasteland. She could hear voices smell other dragons but she couldn't see them. She found herself at the edge of a cliff, fleshy tendrils stretching to meet the brambles of the tangled wood. The mirror lay down in exhaustion, her head lolling over the side, staring into the dark valley as she fell into slumber.

She awoke to a soft humming, a blue mirror leant over her, smoothing a cool cream on her legs. The mirror glanced up at a purple flower and murmured to it.

"I cannot save them from the infection" Her voice was tinged with sadness. The flower shifted before responding.

"Well we will have to ask her what she wishes" The flower turned to her, aware that she was awake. After a moment she realised the flower had a lifeforce that rivaled a god. She blinked a few time at the creature, before it dawned on her it was actually a dragon. Her eyes widened as the fae stared at her waiting to respond. She sat up, looking around.

Rhune was in room carved from stone, a beautifully decorated one. She seemed to be in an infirmary, various beds had been set out and jars of medicine and herbs lines the walls. The blue mirror was clearly this lairs healer, she walked around the room like she owned it, a small bag of herbs was attached to her belt and her claws were stained gold from working with medicine. The fae, on the other hand, was a different story altogether. There was something powerful behind those eyes, his body was completely free of anything plague born, something unique for a dragon in the wastelands and his energy was something she had never seen before. It twisted around the room, reaching for everything living, curling around them boosting their own energy. She watched as his green lifeforce entwined with hers, mixing beautifully with her red unafraid of her plagued being. He saw her watching and reaching down to the energy only they could see, twisted his claw through the light, causing swirls to fly up into the air around them.

"You are-" She started her, voice faltering.

"Cursed with the power of the gods, just as you" He waited as the information sunk in before continuing. "Now my lady" His voice was warm to her ears "You know as well as I that the infection will take you within the year if you leave it be" She lowered her head, watching as the other mirror continue to smear the salve. She had ignored how bad they had gotten, hiding them with scraps of fabric. There were barely any scales left on her limbs, the exposed muscle was black and rotten and her bones clearly showed through. The bright dots of the infection only continued to climb further eating away at her before her very eyes. The fae spoke softly as he watched her eyes traced the dying flesh

"Either they go or you go, that is only a choice you can make" A single tear caught in her eye. She refused to show weakness in front of the strangers "We can make you prosthetic limbs but you will be stuck with us here for as long as it takes to heal my lady" She looked up at the young fae

"You would do that for a stranger?" He nodded

"Our clan is home to whoever needs it, strangers or not we will help where we can" The fae's eyes traced her limbs, clearly deep in thought. "My lady?" Rhune met his eyes "Would you be averse to me using my nature magic to create your new limbs? It is the best way to bond them with your body" Rhunes brow furrowed, it would be easy to reject the idea, yet the Plaguebringer herself wished for her to show Plague dragons were not as deadly as their reputation claimed. The strange fae left to let her consider it, murmuring in soft tones to the healer. He would occasionally gesture with his claws towards her limbs tracing shapes in the air to convey his ideas. Maybe this was a way to show plagues true nature accepting help from the nature born fae. She remembered what the exalted said at the Plaguebringer’s court. She was east and these strange dragons were offering a dragon such as herself home. This had to be the place they were talking about.

"Sir?" Rhune broke her silence

"Please, call me Panzi" She nodded

"Panzi, our flights are sisters" A small smile crept onto the fae's face "Maybe it's time to show not all siblings argue" She smiled weakly.

Rhune wobbled on her new legs. The living wood had been painstakingly bonded to her very body giving her full control and sensation from them. The green ridges of her body had already begun to curl around the new limbs, readily accepting them. Panzi grinned as he watched her totter about, like a hatchling learning to walk. The mirror grinned back. The pair had spent many weeks together as they created the wooden prosthetics, and from that a strong friendship had flourished.

“Let us show the others” Panzi chirped, almost dragging the unsteady mirror from the room. The other cursed shaman, as Rhune had taken to calling them, were waiting patiently in the main chamber of the lair. Shadowtaker and Jaka were settled among them anticipating the reveal of their friends new body. Finally Panzi pushed Rhune into the large room. There were many oohs and ahhs and Rhune showed of her legs, a proud smile on both her and Panzi’s faces. Jaka made his way over to the pair, he gently pressed his lips to Rhune’s forehead and draped a bonewood necklace over her head.

“Welcome to the clan, my love”

The tale of Panzi and Rhune

The infected snarled as they approached the group, their eyes unblinking. The group of infected consisted of three mirrors and an guardian. It was not the largest group they had come across but it was the first that mixed breeds. Panzi and Rhune shared a look. A small smirk and a nod later they lept into the air. The three mirrors were attacked first Rhune twisted the fleshy tendrils from the ground around their legs preventing them from taking flight. The red eyes betrayed their immunity to her poisonous attack so instead she planted her feet on the ground and steadied herself. She lowered her head and from the ridges of venomous green on her back sharp darts fired, impaleing the closest mirror. She watched Panzi as he swept from above, dive bombing the rightmost mirror. The small fae had fire in his eyes, dagger like roots shot from the ground injuring the crazed mirror. He landed on the infected back, forcing its chest to the ground with a sickening crunch. Ruthlessly he swiped his claws across its neck before taking flight again, dodging a swipe from the lumbering guardian. The fae flitted around the guardian, running his hands across the giants stomach, willing venomous vines to grow and connect him to the ground

The moment he was clear from the guardian Rhune roared, digging her claws into the ground, directing her poison to travel along the vines Panzi had created. The guardian screeched an unnatural sound and the poison bleed into him, Rhune bared her fangs as she watched the guardian falter, it wouldnt stop him but it would dent his attack. She felt her tendrils holding the third mirror break. The infected lept into the air, heading straight for her, as she raised her claws to her attacker a quick flash knocked the mirror from the air, sending him spiraling through the air. The faes eyes were angry, and he darted after the mirror, his claws glowing and teeth bared. Panzi growled as he and the mirror fought on the ground. Thorned vines repeatedly curled around the larger dragons limbs pulling sharp claws from the fae only to snap under the mirrors shear strength. Tough scales tried to repel the thorns, Panzi’s magic drawing the very life from the mirror bolstering his own reserves. The vines became thicker and stronger, thorns cut through the mirror hide easily and ripped the infected dragons muscles. With panzi occupied with the strong mirror Rhune turned her attention to the guardian. He lowered his head to his foe, his features twisted in anger, he snarled. The guardian charged his sword like claws aimed for the mirror. She waited, watching as he quickly approached, at the last moment she leapt, her flexible body curling around his neck, her claws attempting to dig into his armoured hide and he tried to shake her off. Bone like spikes grew from the ground and disgusting tendrils attached to the giant's legs, a rotting virus traveling along the connection spreading a fast acting rot to his limbs. He screeched again, drawing the faes attention from foe. With a powerful kick Panzi had his breath taken from him, before he knew it he was in the air. Rhune shouted as she leapt towards him, catching him mid air and returning him to ground in one swift jump. Within moments she was on the infected mirror. Her jaw clamped around his neck in a finally deadly attack. Panzi pulled his eyes away from the scene and back to the guardian. He had been weakened by Rhune’s rot and her bone like structures were still attached to him. The fae spread his wings twisting around the pulsing rotten tendrils, mixing his own poison with hers, creating a formidable mixture even the Plaguebringer would have difficulty with. With a final echoing groan the guardian collapsed.

Panzi landed next to Rhune, in harmony the pair started to twist the flora willing it to drag the contagious bodies into the ground out of harm's way.

The two collapsed together at the clans weston outpost, a wooden guard tower that stood proud guarding their territory. Their hearts thundered as the adrenaline from the fight coarsed through their bodies. In the dusks silence the only sound was their breaths, their eyes watching the stars rise.

“They are getting closer to the border” Panzi mused, his voice unfazed by the battle

“That does not bother us now” Rhune replied. These skirmishes with the infected were increasing in frequency. The shamans had been sent to protect the clan's territory and to inform their allies of the threat. The inseparable pair had of course been assigned together, their abilities complimented each other, and Neptune knew his charges well.

Rhunes wing was stretched under Panzis body as the two lay on their backs, side by side. Her tail snaked around his, twisting together unconsciously. The smaller fae turned to his friend, propped up on one arm he studied the mirrors cales as she watched the sky. Her wooden limbs were still as strong at the day they had been created and they were now as much a part of her as her wings. Her eyes shone with power and emotion, the two always knew what the other was thinking, their lifeforces constantly entwined, even their chambers in the lair were connected and it was strange to see the two apart. Panzi watched the rise and fall of his friend's chest, draping one of his unusual wingers over her stomach as he curled next to her, his eyes still full of energy. Rhune turned her head to the fae,

“What has grabbed your attention?” She asked, her voice echoing her smile.

“You of course my lady” She placed her arm around his shoulders pulling him closer, her claws tracing the patterns on his side. She sighed quietly as she felt the warmth of his body next to hers. Their heads were close, to close for logic to stop Panzi. Before he realised what he was doing his lips pressed against hers. Rhunes eyes widened before sliding shut and returning the kiss. The two dragons tangled together as passion took over, their tails tangled together and wings hugged each other tightly. And there they stayed in each other's arms until morning came.

The harsh light woke them, the hot sun bearing down on the tangled dragons. Rhune woke first her tired eyes sliding over to where Panzi was sleeping on her chest. The memories of the night came flooding back. She bolted upright, sending the smaller dragon flying across the room. The dazed fae rubbed his head as he woke

“What was that for- Oh” Their eyes met, panic across their faces. “I thought you loved Jaka?”

“I do!” She snapped back “I thought you loved Silvia?”

“I do!” They continued to stare “How can we love two at once?” Rhune ran a hand across the back of her neck

“We are both mated this should be able to happen” Panzi carefully edged closer to the mirror. His tail twisting with hers in comfort.

“Is it possible to have two mates instead of one?” The mirror shrugged

“What do we do?” She murmured “What are we?” They sat in silence, as the sun crept higher into the sky, their bodies unconsciously leaning against each other.

“Neptune will know” Green eyes met red. Panzi continued “Neptune always knows” The mirror nodded and together they left the outpost, heading straight for the clan.

Panzi clung to Rhunes shoulders as she flew through the gorge leading to the lair. Jaka was at his usual place at the entrance, his eyes lighting up as he spotted them. Rhune paused briefly as she landed at the entrance, lifting her head slightly to receive a kiss from her mate, Panzi felt a twinge of guilt in his chest.

She trotted inside heading straight for Neptune's chamber. Neptunes chamber was one of the largest in the lair. Mostly due to his size but also due to the large Scrying pool in its center, the main place he saw his visions. The crystal clear water reflected against the stone walls, throwing beautiful light that decorated the space. The great guardian was lying near the entrance, waiting for his charges to return. The great guardian smiled as he saw them enter, only to frown when he saw their expressions

“What's wrong my children?” His deep blue eyes searching them for signs of harm, Rhune shook her head as Panzi left her shoulders in favour of hovering closer to their friends eye level.

“We need you advice Neptune” The mirror sat down with a huff, her tail twitching nervously “Is it possible for a dragon to have more than one mate?” There was a brief silence before Neptune burst out laughing.

“Neptune?!” Panzi cried out, shocked by their friends reaction

“I’m sorry my dears” He wiped a tear from his eye “It’s just taken you two long enough” Panzi and Rhune shared a confused glance. He stod, moving closer to the two, with a great paw he gently pushed the two closer together “You are two parts of one whole, you are destined to be together in all aspects of your lives”

Unfazed at being pressed together Rhune spoke up “But we both found our mates, how can we have more than one?” Her eyes were wide, waiting for a reply from their guardian.

“I will agree it is rare for dragons to have more than one mate, but there is nothing usual about us” He gently stroked their heads, “Go talk with your mates, I’m sure they will accept you” Before they could question him he carefully pushed them through the door into the hallway.

The pair simply exchanged a glance before heading off to find their mates.

Jaka’s eyes narrowed when he saw Rhune appear without Panzi at her side.

“You are either here to ravish me or have a serious talk” He reached out and tucked the mirror under his arm, “From your expression it's the second option” He ran a claw down her spine, gently caressing her.

“I love you, you know that right?” The orange guardian hummed in agreement. “But I also love Panzi”

“And?” Jaka mused “I am not so selfish as to not share you with your other half” He ideally watched her features twist in surprise

“Did everyone know apart from us?” She asked, Jaka laughed

“There is actually a betting pool on weather you were mates already” He hugged his mate closer. I already share you with Panzi, we spend most nights all piled together in his chamber” Rhune nuzzled her head into his chest “Seeing you happy is all I want” He lifted his arm, releasing his mate from the hug, gently nudging her towards the lair.

“Go speak to him, I will always be here for you” He watched her leave with a smile on his face, it was time to find a new topic for the lairs betting pool.
ecOwodU.png

The pair met in Panzis hamber that evening. Their wings clashed as they hugged tightly, they lips pressed together in a passionate kiss. They broke apart for a moment allowing Panzi to speak, his voice excited and impatient
“I love you” He kissed her hand “Will you please be my mate?” She nodded at the two fell to the ground in a tangled mess of limbs and laughter. Unbeknown to them in the main chamber, there were groans mixed with cheers of their fellow clan members as the result of the bet was announced and treasure changed hands.
