Jonah had never felt truly connected to anyone else. Looking back, he supposed assuming himself to be the wrong gender along with his parents and birth clan had played a large part in it. It wasn't until many years later, when Jonah had settled into a lone, nomadic lifestyle (as much as one could) and a longneck he traded resources with assumed him to be male. Jonah didn't correct him, but the longneck became the most regular fixture he had in his life. He was a travelling salesman, visiting friendly dragon clans to trade wares and send things back home to his herd. Soon enough, Jonah was on first name terms with the little fellow. He introduced himself as Fairfax, and Jonah chose his new name on the spot. It just felt right in a way Jonah had never felt before when Fairfax greeted him with his 'hello, Sir's and the 'anything I can do for the fine gentleman today?'s. And to be called Jonah or Mister Jonah instead of Joann (which he hadn't heard in forever anyway) was even better. ![]() He didn't think of himself as lonely, even though he only saw Fairfax every couple of months. Jonah was fine with his own company, he was just beginning to wonder if there wasn't anything more. Then, one day, he came across a strange area of the Viridian Labyrinth encased in frost and as he approached, he noticed a dragon just at the edge of it. Ordinarily, Jonah wasn't too concerned about other dragons - he exchanged pleasantries and moved on. But this one had a longneck companion helping them forage, and Jonah had a bit of a soft spot for longnecks. He would always look upon dragons who assisted them favourably. Intrigued by the peculiar frost, Jonah approached them. He did not regret it. The dragon - Blessing, was fascinating. So devoted to their mission of protecting the Clan they didn't remember even though they'd been trapped there since they were a hatchling. Blessing had seen nothing of the world, but they weren't naive. They weren't bitter or resentful about their circumstances either. Jonah thought they had a beautiful soul, and found his purpose in remaining in the Viridian Labyrinth to keep Blessing company every time they emerged from his quarantine zone. Jonah told them about his own travels, of all the places they could see when their duty was done. He wanted to give Blessing hope and to broaden their dreams. Despite remaining in one place, Jonah's horizons broadened too. A great affection grew beside his protectiveness of Blessing, blooming into a love so sweet it surprised him. Jonah never expected to be making a nest. He'd tried once, forever ago, but the eggs didn't take. He'd merely been doing what had been expected of him, but this time it felt so natural. That's when he first met Blessing's guardian and sole companion, Kiril, for the first time. He didn't hesitate to lecture Jonah on what a fool he was, accusing him of being a distraction in a very dangerous and delicate situation. Of how this was a terrible place to attempt to start a family. It seemed Blessing had kept Jonah's existence a secret from Kiril. Jonah wasn't upset by it. He understood. And he told Kiril in no uncertain terms precisely what he could do with his unwanted opinions. Despite butting heads often, Jonah and Kiril did have a great respect for one another, and when Kiril grew to trust him, Jonah's help was more than appreciated. |
