Kuebiko
n. a state of exhaustion inspired by acts of senseless violence, which force you to revise your image of what can happen in this world—mending the fences of your expectations, weeding out all unwelcome and invasive truths, cultivating the perennial good that’s buried under the surface, and propping yourself up like an old scarecrow, who’s bursting at the seams but powerless to do anything but stand there and watch.

A coward.

Cries for help, claws grating on stone, the chaos of the crude medic tent, someone yelling, always yelling, but now tainted with disbelief, and the horror and no no not the wounded -

She had run.

So she paints the walls. Entire caverns and tunnels filled with images of battle or her patients. She wants them to be remembered, all those who died that day.

It's easier to sleep, after hours of putting her visions into the reality. Sprawled across the stone are elaborate murals, images of those who had died in the attack, those who she had abandoned.

Sometimes she paints the hospital. It's hard to do, and even harder to look at once she's done. But it's better that way. It hurts, to remember her time working there, and then the air filling with toxin, someone giving her a mask, saying she deserved it (she didn't), and then running, knowing without a doubt all the wounded and helpless she had left in her wake.

She meant to heal.

But she was selfish. Too selfish.

(She still can't take off the mask.)

But they will not be forgotten. The visages of the lives she both saved and condemned will not change in this dry, empty tunnel. That givers her a sliver of peace, a fragile thing (that she doesn't deserve).

She has tried to redeem herself. But she can't see a wound or remove the mask or step into another hospital without the crushing fear and weight of the memories knocking the breath and courage from her.

Kuebiko is tired. She's tired of being afraid, of feeling unworthy, of knowing that someone in the world had decided to aim an attack at the helpless.

She wonders if they will forgive her, those she abandoned.

Kuebiko tells herself she paints for forgiveness, to make up for her moment of weakness.

But in truth, in the glaring overbright reality where not even healing is sacred, in the the everlasting bone deep exhaustion, she paints the walls to keep the images out of her head.

And only that.
