Vermilion's dark Shadow eyes may look out of place in the light of the Brightspire Clan, but this cheerful jokester fits right in. A confident fighter and hard worker, it's rare to see this Ridgeback without a smile on her face and a quip at the ready.
Hatched in the Foxfire Bramble, Vermilion grew up with the games and illusions of her home flight - things she still loves today. However, when the time came for Vermilion to find her own way through life, she didn't hesitate. She took off for the Light of the Sunbeam Ruins, her curiosity and drive for knowledge powering every wingbeat.
Vermilion joined and settled in Brightspire without incident. Her work ethic and wry sense of humor quickly won over Dante, and the bond between the two makes them a formidable addition to Kelmarin's defense force. Between Dante's tactical mind, Vermilion's sheer power and love of the fight, and Kelmarin's leadership, Brightspire's small territory is extremely well defended.
Nothing is more likely to flip Vermilion's mood than a direct threat to those she cares about as friends and family. She often misses the shades of grey in an argument, and when her opponent crosses the line from right to wrong in her mind, she'll charge straight in with little or no warning given, and she'll fight it out until the end. Her smile and jokes remain in place, as do her natural Shadow ploys, but her tone shifts with her mood and she's just as good at aiming her verbal jabs as she is her physical ones. Dante's one of few who can talk her down, but if he agrees with his mate, the Ridgeback-Spiral duo are a difficult force to face.
Vermilion and Dante share their lair with their reclusive Serthis familiar, Shezzran. Shezzran isn't shy about making it known that she wants nothing to do with most of the Brightspire dragons. Her two lair-mates being the obvious exceptions to this rule, she'll also tolerate both Cora and Yuletide if they seek her out.
How Shezzran came to live with Vermilion isn't entirely clear to everyone. Given the pale chemical burns criss-crossing Shezzran's upper body and the stiff catch in her spine when she moves, most speculate that Vermilion pulled the Serthis out of a bad situation with another dragon. Dante's verified this on occasion, though he won't give details. Neither Shezzran nor Vermilion talk about it at all. What is known is that bothering the Serthis usually attracts an irritated Ridgeback, so Vermilion's clanmates tend to avoid Shezzran as much as she avoids them.
While Shezzran avoids the other Brightspire dragons, it's not uncommon to see her sunning by
herself or visiting with the few other Beastclan members of the lair. Some dragons have grumbled about these "meetings", but since the secretive Serthis has the trust of two of Brightspire's best warriors and a Clan leader, these concerns have remained simple whispers.
