______
“Ragnarok. Get it together.” Moonshard snapped, tossing his head in irritation. The other
Imperial scowled back at him, dusting off the leaves and dirt that had covered his legs from
crouching in the foliage. He kicked at the branch that had snapped under his foot, tossing it to
the side. Drawing himself back up, he looked back at Moonshard steadily.
“My apologies,” he said evenly, “but I also don’t see you contributing much to this hunt.”
Moonshard flared his nostrils indignantly and huffed.
“At least I’m not actively messing it up,” he retorted. “Come on. It’s nearly midday, and the
others are expecting us to return soon. We had better not go back empty-handed.”
Ragnarok nodded, and sniffed at the air. His keen eyes scanned the forest, and he caught the
scent of another deer or two, coming from not too far away. He was surprised that the first
quarry hadn’t alerted its kind to their presence, but decided to not question it. He nodded in the
direction that the scent came from, and Moonshard took the lead, sniffing along as well.
They soon found a small clearing, where a trio of deer were grazing, completely oblivious to the
nearby threat. The Imperials wore dark green hunters’ garb, and blended in well with the forest,
despite the bright natural colors of their scales. Crouched low to the ground, downwind of their
prey, Ragnarok and Moonshard glanced at each other as they crept closer. Ragnarok glanced
at Moonshard, and the blue dragon nodded, signaling for them to attack.
The two burst from the treeline at full speed, and the first deer barely had time to lift its head
before Moonshard was upon it. Ragnarok spread his wings and launched across the clearing,
taking down a second as it tried to bound away. He closed his jaws around its neck, quickly
ending its life, and turned to see the white tail of the third deer disappearing through the
underbrush.
“Nevermind that one,” Moonshard said, placing a paw over his own kill. “Two will be plenty for a
meal, assuming that the others were competent enough to bring back at least a rabbit or two.”
“Don’t be so dismissive of your fellow clan mates,” Ragnarok sighed. “The clan works together,
and everyone tries their best to fulfill their roles.”
“Sure. Whatever.” Moonshard bent down and took the deer in his teeth, and turned to head
back to the lair without another word. Ragnarok sighed again and followed suit.

______ Before long, the forest gave way to the sun-bleached white stones of the Mirrorlight Promenade.
They wound their way through the vast ruins, careful to skirt around outside of the lair areas of
other clans, slipping through the crumbling archways and pillars until they reached their own camp.

“Well done,” Nightfire said, nodding at the two hunters as they entered the camp’s main
clearing. “Thank you for your contribution.” Moonshard bowed his head, and dropped the deer
off in the central food pile. Ragnarok laid his down at his feet for a moment.
“How fare you today, Nightfire?” he asked. He could see his clan leader’s dark blue eyes
swimming with the struggle of containing the Shade within him.
“No better or worse than usual,” he said. “Although,” he added, “I’d be much better off and
happier if the Beastclans would stop poking at our borders.
“Hm?” Ragnarok tipped his head slightly in question.
“From our western border,” Nightfire growled. “The wolves from the Tangled Wood have been
crossing the border and poaching our prey. Many of the other hunting parties returned
empty-handed today. And Aiden was slightly wounded by a pack while on patrol.”
“If you’d consent to it,” Ragnarok suggested, “I could lead a party out to make an attempt at
driving them back.”
“Yes,” Nightfire said shortly. “Although I think a capable warrior such as yourself wouldn’t have
too much trouble. Just bring one other dragon… take Moonshard, since the two of you had
success in your hunt today.”
Ragnarok winced. “Very well,” he said obediently, bowing his head. “I’ll go let him know.”

______ “I still don’t understand why you’ve brought me along,” Moonshard growled. The sun had
lowered in the sky, and the light had shifted to a more muted orange as they made their way
back out for the second time that day.
“Take it as a compliment,” Ragnarok said amicably. He had taken a short rest in the afternoon
following mealtime, and felt refreshed enough to deal with Moonshard’s cold shoulder. “Nightfire
believes in your capability, and justifiably so.”
“Let’s make this quick,” Moonshard said. “I don’t think we should have too much trouble,
anyway.”
“Indeed,” Ragnarok agreed.
They spoke no further until they approached the border. By this time, the sun was nearing the
horizon, and the treeline of the Shadow territory cast long shadows across the grass.
“I’m not noticing any commotion,” Moonshard said dryly. “I bet Aiden was imagining things. Let’s
just go back–”
He was cut off by a harsh growl, followed by another, then another, then another… and many
more. The Imperial dug his claws into the ground, muscles tensing along his flank. Ragnarok
took a step towards his comrade, and the treeline exploded.
Five huge, black wolves burst from the foliage. They were easily two thirds the size of the
dragons, and cloaked in wisps of black and purple magic. The alpha was even larger, its
shoulder at the same height as Ragnarok’s, and it took point as the pack moved closer, slowly
but surely. The dark lips curled, revealing rows of sharp, shining white teeth.
Then, as if some invisible signal had been made, they pounced. The alpha leapt straight at
Moonshard, and the other three made for Ragnarok. He was quickly cut off from his clanmate,
as he leapt backwards, knocking the first wolf away with a wide swing of his tail. It let out a yelp
as it fell backwards, rolling through the grass, but recovered quickly, following up with its pack
members. The wolves were much less advanced than the dragons - they threw themselves
forwards with reckless abandon, and Ragnarok made his moves defensively, waiting for them to
move into his range and then lashing out with his claws and powerful tail. He caught one across
the face, blinding it. The wolf staggered away, and Ragnarok followed up with a sharp blow to
the back of its head. He felt a pain on his back as the other two pounced on him, sinking their
teeth into one of his wings. Rolling, he crushed one under him, and the other jumped clear, only
to be caught by a jet of Ragnarok’s fire.
It was then that he saw the struggle Moonshard was locked in - the alpha wolf was on top of the
Imperial, jaws snapping at his neck. Ragnarok could see that Moonshard had been h,
there was a scarlet streak across one of his hind legs. Throwing himself forwards, he flew clear
over Moonshard, taking the wolf with him onto the ground. It howled in surprise, twisting its head
to bite at Ragnarok’s front paw. He hissed in pain, and slashed at the wolf’s belly with his other
forearm, as Moonshard darted in and closed his teeth around its neck.
“Are you all right?” Ragnarok asked, looking concernedly at Moonshard’s weeping wound.
“I’ll be fine,” Moonshard said, catching his breath. “....thank you.”
Ragnarok smiled. “You’re most welcome. Now that that takes care of that, shall we head back?”
Moonshard looked around. “Yes;” he said, “but we should bring at least a couple of these back
to camp. I think some of the nesting females would appreciate the pelts to line their nests with.”
Without further ado, he took a wolf by its tail and started dragging it back towards the camp.
“How thoughtful,” Ragnarok smiled again to himself, shaking his head. “Perhaps there’s hope for him to change yet.”
