Lasair's birth was highly anticipated by his grandparents, especially his grandfathers, best friends from hatchlinghood Shylock and Hanasama. Only his father was around to raise him, but with all four of his grandparents living in the same clan this was never too much of an issue. Still, Lasair couldn't help but think his father was lonely without his mother or any significant other around.

Lasair's mother left without warning before he even hatched, and he has never seen her. His clanmates tell him she was a no-good, manipulative, selfish dragoness without a caring bone in her body. His family says he's better off without her, since she couldn't even bring herself to love him instead of herself. His father says she was complicated, and don't worry about it Lassie, have a few honeybees and relax. All he knows for sure is that she looked just like his grandmother Amora and that most of his family would love to get their claws on her.

Partially to prove himself loyal to the clan his mother betrayed, he has made it known to the leader of the clan and his family that he wishes to pursue the position of Deputy, second in command of the clan. He has some competition, though; upon hearing his intentions Resheph also stepped forward announcing his own desire for the position. While it's clear Lasair has the heart and desire for the position, he lacks any experience and wisdom. Resheph has both. Lasair intends to work as hard as he can to beat out Resheph before Heulwen makes her final decision. He does not trust the imperial, feeling him too cold and ruthless.
