F R O S T B I T E
WINTER NOCTURNE
(CLAN RESIDENCE) Quote/Headline/Description “It took you long enough to get here, Frost.” Frostbite frowned at Iceblink’s words as he entered the breakroom behind his father’s store, partially due to her tone of voice but mostly because she was right. He had forgotten about their scheduled meeting until only an hour before. By the time he remembered, it was too late for him to have any hope of making it on time, and, knowing her, the hour she must have spent waiting at the table in this tiny, shabby room would have soured her mood by the minute. Then again, maybe not; ever since the Prince removed her noble status two weeks ago her current accommodations were not much better than this place, and so, with a proper explanation for his tardiness, there was a chance she wouldn’t be completely livid. He sighed. “I know,” he admitted as he walked moved to sit across from her, “and I’m sorry. You should have seen the bakery, though – it was completely insane! Everyone wanted their bread but we didn’t have any left, and then someone threatened to come back later and sack the place, so-“ “Actually?” Iceblink interrupted. Her eyes were not as soft as he had hoped. “Yeah. Like I said, it was crazy. Turns out people go a little nuts when they don’t have enough to eat. Who knew.” He paused for a moment, long enough to notice the hollowness of his friend’s cheeks, then continued in a slightly quieter tone. “Hey, speaking of which, have you eaten, Ice?” “I’m ok,” she replied, shifting in her chair. “You sure?” Frostbite asked. “Because last time I checked you still don’t have a job, and even with money it’s hard to find a bite to eat around here.” “You worry too much.” “Yeah, well, so do you, except you just worry about everyone but yourself. If you aren’t going to take care of you, then that means it’s my job as your friend to take care of you, and I won’t have anyone saying I’m shirking my duties. So. Seriously. Have you eaten?” The corner of her lip turned up into a lopsided smile, but settled back into a resolved line in the blink of an eye. “I’m fine, Frost. I’m touched, really, but we have more to talk about tonight than my eating habits,” she grunted. “Or lack thereof.” “I told you, I’m fine. Now be quiet and listen to me, because I’ve got news that you’re going to want to hear.” She reached underneath her chair and pulled out a small satchel. Frostbite’s stomach formed a hard knot as she pulled out page after page of handwritten documents, each of them adorned with a royal seal. He took one of the papers and peeked at its title. CLASSIFIED: MILITARY DIRECTIVE 23110. “What is this?” Frostbite questioned. When did his mouth become so dry? Iceblink’s expression was alarmingly grim as she closed up her bag and locked her eyes with his. She pointed silently at his paper, so he began to read. At 02:30hrs on November 10, Blue Mountain Squadron will report to settlement marked on Appendix A and complete assigned orders. Main objectives are as follows: locate and remove dissidents; suspend operations for businesses whose funds supply dissidents and their operations; eliminate threats to peace and security of the Kingdom. Use of force under Charter IV is authorized… The realization hit Frostbite like a slap to the face. “No. No, this can’t be real,” he sputtered. But it was real, all right; the evidence was plain on the page before him, whether or not he was prepared to admit it to himself. This document was licence for the Prince’s men to go to the settlement and cause wanton mayhem and destruction, all for the purpose of removing anyone who he might consider a threat to his reign. A Prince? No. This man was a tyrant. “Oh, dear god. November 10th, that’s next week! He’s- just- this is insane! Oh my god, Ice, where did you get these?” Frostbite demanded. “Friend of a friend. I might not be a noble anymore, but I still have the connections of one,” she explained flatly, “All of these other papers say the exact same thing, except they mention different places and times and address different units all around the country. You thought the bakery was bad, Frost? That’s just the beginning. Things are only going to get worse from here on out.” Silence washed over the breakroom. From somewhere outside, Frostbite could hear someone yelling in the distance, and it occurred to him that, one day soon, that sound might be the normal ambient noise of his neighborhood. Iceblink’s voice was small and fragile when she finally spoke up again. “Frost,” she said with a tremble in her words, “What are we going to do?” What can we do? Frost asked himself. Leave? Impossible – father wasn’t in good enough shape to survive the trip, and he wouldn’t leave this store behind even if he could. But what was he supposed to do, then? Just wait here and take it? Sit on this information until doomsday came and then try and pretend he had no idea what was going on? Frostbite caught himself grinding his teeth. He reached across the table and held Iceblink’s hand. “We’re going to fight,” he stated. “But for that, we’re going to need an army, and I’m prepared to build one if you are.” |
