WINTER WILD CLAW
(CLAN RESIDENCE)

'Take flight with the winter wind'

The freezing night air burned Iceblink’s lungs as she frantically ran in the snow, checking over her shoulder in case of pursuers. How long had she been running? An hour, maybe? More? It didn’t matter; all the Wildclaw cared about was getting away and getting home, no matter the costs that would be involved. Tears stung at her eyes. They quickly froze, just as the blood on her talons had frozen minutes after she had escaped the prison complex, and the thought of what she had just done made her stomach churn.

You had no choice, she screamed in her mind, you had no choice, you had no choice-

Her foot caught a rock; she tripped and landed hard on her right shoulder against the cold, unfeeling ground. She screamed. The sound echoed in the darkness against the stone walls of the basin, reinforcing the fact that she was completely, utterly alone. Iceblink choked back a sob. How did it come to this? Why did he have to force her hand? Why couldn’t he have put her in a nice, low-security prison somewhere on the coast, instead of hiding her away in the mountains where it proved to be so difficult to escape? With a grunt, she struggled to push herself off from the ground. It was a challenge with shackled hands, but she managed to bring her legs under her again and, using her tail for balance, stumbled off in what she only hoped was the right direction.

Three weeks ago, she would never have guessed that she might one day be convicted as a traitor. Of course, that was before the Prince had taken the throne. She knew him in passing: he was the eldest son of the late Queen, and Iceblink was but the daughter of a relatively minor duchess who served loyally in the royal court. They occasionally found themselves at the same royal functions and same imperial galas, but the reality was that neither one of the two of them truly knew the other. However, while Iceblink was invisible to the eyes of the Prince – just another face in an ever-expanding crowd – he was the Prince, and therefore his actions came under both public and private scrutiny whether he wanted it or not.

The death of the Queen was no exception. As her heir, the Prince had taken great care in organizing a lavish funeral, complete with a candlelight procession down the capital’s main street and a heart-wrenching speech about how much his mother would be missed; news of her passing spread throughout the kingdom. However, rumors were the currency of the royal court, and behind closed doors there were whispers that the death of the Queen was rather sudden, indeed. She had not been ill. In truth, she was the very model of health. There were those that suggested that stress had done her in at last, but others – Iceblink among them – insinuated something much more sinister.

How very interesting, Iceblink remembered the Duke of Alcompte’s son whispering in her ear, that the Queen’s corpse was found with an empty cup of tea, and one that was supposedly brewed by her beloved son, at that.

The Prince’s changes were swift. First, most everyone who served in his mother’s court was thrown out into the street, replaced by an entirely new array of nobles who were loyal to His Majesty. Those disenfranchised court members were the lucky ones. A select few (the ones who openly suspected the Prince of matricide) were tossed in prison. Second, through a bit of crafty political maneuvering, the Prince passed an edict that increased taxation exponentially and placed all funds derived from such means into his own personal treasury for his own personal use. The last change – the one that forced Iceblink and her friends to act – was the terror. Buildings were burned, shops were sacked…chaos tore the capital apart, and as a consequence it brought a number of concerned individuals together under the mutual desire to take action. They called themselves the Queen’s Guard, and as a uniform they fashioned crowns out of ice in mockery of their new King.

Iceblink was one such individual. In fact, she and her good friend Frostbite were the organization’s joint leaders. But now as she ran her crown felt heavy, and part of her wished that her hands were free enough for her to take it off and leave it behind her in the snow.

You know that’s not an option, she reminded herself. You have to finish what you started. For everyone.

The coup was planned for February 9th and was to begin at the first light of dawn. Iceblink was jailed on January 4th only a few hours after sunset. According to her count, she had endured seventeen days of questioning and torture in that cold, terrible prison complex, and therefore, allotting three days for transportation, that had to mean that today was January 24th. If she could find a village, she could get directions home. If she could get directions home, there was a chance that she could make it back in time to take part in the Queen’s Guard’s coup d’état. And, if the stars aligned perfectly and she made it where she needed to be, Iceblink just might be able to help bring peace to the land and people that she loved with every freezing fibre of her being.

She shuddered. The wind bit through her scales and chilled her muscles, causing them to tense and slow her movements. She might be hindered, but she would not be stopped. The Queen’s Guard was coming, through wind and snow and freezing cold, and Iceblink was determined to let nothing prevent her from leading the charge.
