Biography

"Lumiere...you will pay for what you did..."

~
Arwyn, Part 1, Volume II
The secret.

~

Continued from Aerico Part 2

A shining black Spiral sat coiled amongst the pale clouds, his large eyes closed. Since he'd been freed from Marica, just one year ago, Arwyn had attempted to call for his lost love, to see if she would be here with him, too.

Yet she did not answer him, nor could he sense her spirit.

“Arwyn...”

The dark Spiral slowly opened his fiery eyes. It was Silver again, but he didn't turn to face the grey dragon.

“We've been at this for too long,” Silver said with sorrow in his voice, “Ruby isn't here.”

Arwyn's eyes blazed and his tone turned cold when he replied. “You're not trying hard enough,” he accused him.

“You're being—”

But Silver didn't get the chance to finish when Arwyn suddenly whirled around, hissing as he launched at Silver, shoving his face into the younger Spiral's and baring his fangs.

“I'M THE ONLY ONE BEING SENSIBLE!” roared the black dragon. “If Ruby is lost, then you must try harder to find her!” Arwyn marvelled at how Silver didn't even back down. The grey Spiral instead stared straight into the ancient dragon's fiery gaze.

“I'm sorry,” Silver said softly. “There's nothing more we can do.”

Arwyn cursed and spun around, turning his back to Silver before stalking away. “Lumiere will pay for this...” his snarled, until he felt a sudden shiver wrack his being, and he stopped.

“What is it?” Silver asked him.

Arwyn didn't answer him. Instead he heard that hated voice in his head.

Care to join us on our little journey? Lumiere's voice rang in his mind.

Arwyn seethed. How DARE you speak to me now.

I've missed you, too.

I'm not interested in anything you have to say. LEAVE me.

Then consider this as an offer. I'm about to reveal our past to my beloved.

Arwyn was startled into silence for a few moments. You do realize that she'll hate you once you do.

I do.

Arwyn couldn't help but crack a smile. Very well. When he heard Lumiere no more, he turned back around to see Silver looking at him curiously.

“What you told me about Lumiere before,” Silver began hesitantly, “it's not true, is it? It can't be...”

“Do you wish to come with me so you can hear the truth from the snake himself?” Arwyn sneered. Silver didn't answer, instead lowering his head and eyes. Arwyn added, “I didn't think so.” Without another word, the black Spiral closed his eyes and he began to vanish from the clouds.

...

Alga stayed close to Lumiere's side as they landed and neared the ruins before them. Neither dragon spoke as they studied the crumbled walls and towers. Once they reached the entrance, Lumiere pushed open the enormous wooden doors and they groaned in protest. Stepping inside the dark and long-abandoned castle, what remained of it, both dragons flexed their claws and balls of blue and yellow light flew from their paws towards the torches that hung on the ancient walls, illuminating the entire room.

Alga marvelled at the sight before her while Lumiere slowly strode ahead to one corner of the room.

Drapes were torn and shredded, windows were smashed, and broken bricks lay scattered across the stone floor. Alga carefully stepped around the shards of glass as she examined the many books that littered the ground, their covers and pages torn or missing.

“Do you know any spells that can restore these books?” Alga asked Lumiere. “If there's valuable information here, we should...” she trailed off, now staring to where Lumiere stood still, by a single curtain hanging from the wall. “Lumiere?” she asked again.

The blue Imperial said nothing, instead tearing down the curtain with a swift gesture. What they both saw now was a painted portrait of a single blue dragon.

Alga's voice was quiet when she spoke again. “Lumiere...is that...” she couldn't bring herself to finish.

But it couldn't be him. Where were his extra antlers? His second set of wings? Was he not born with them? And the way those eyes stared out to her...they weren't his eyes.

“It was me,” Lumiere said, his yellow gaze never leaving hers. “Before I became this,” he added, flaring all four of his wings.

Alga took a single step back. “What...what are you talking about? Didn't you always have them? You told me...”

The way he looked at her now was an expression she'd never seen on his face before. Though he gave her a small smile, his eyes seemed sad.

“Alga,” the Imperial began softly, “we were never really here for the artifacts. I think you're ready to know the truth...”

King Arawn
Arwyn stared at the fierce pair of eyes in the mirror's reflection. Standing tall and sweeping his golden cape to one side, he set the glowing crown upon his head.

“My Lord?”

Arwyn didn't meet the gaze of the other dragon that appeared at his side as they continued to speak.

“How do you wish your parents be...”

Arwyn snarled, “Cremated of course, you twit. Their bodies will be burned at sunset, before my marriage to Ruby.” The black Spiral then waved his paw, dismissing the other dragon.

He turned to stride down the grand halls, pondering to himself. It had been difficult finding servants to send out to invite the other clans to the wedding, as several dragons had vanished without word over the past few years. And Lumiere, Arwyn's close partner, kept locking himself down below in the basement. Arwyn hadn't seen the Imperial for weeks now, but the young Lord had specifically instructed that nodrake interrupt Lumiere whilst he perfected the new spells he's been working on. The last time he saw Lumiere, the big blue dragon had even said so himself that he'd wanted to surprise his old friend by only showing his magic once it was fully completed.

Arwyn stopped when he noticed a pink Spiral dart up to him frantically, his large eyes round with fear as he rambled.

“Your Majesty!” the pink dragon gasped out. “In the basement—I heard screaming—I think Ruby is—”

“Don't be daft!” Arwyn snapped, and the other Spiral cowered. “There's nodrake down there but Lumiere, and you are not to disturb him. Is that understood?” The pink Spiral trembled but nodded, and Arwyn continued his way around him.

Other dragons may not have permission to visit the basement as Lumiere worked, but surely the Imperial wouldn't mind if Arwyn himself went down there. The thought was almost laughable. Lumiere shouldn't mind at all! After all, Arwyn was now the new king, and his own magic rivalled Lumiere's, should the other dragon challenge him.

When he reached the staircase leading down, Arwyn paused to listen, though he heard nothing. He stepped down the flight silently, his long cape trailing the floor behind him as he made it to the bottom.

The torches that hung on the walls lit the whole room, and a few of the many curtains were closed, hiding whatever lay behind them. Though Arwyn thought nothing of it, until he stepped further into the room still, and a light crash sounded to his left, and one of the curtains waved slightly. Darting over to it, Arwyn swept the curtain aside, and he nearly stumbled back in horror at the sight before him.

Several dragons were sitting or crouched on the cold stone floor, their limbs, their wings, and their jaws tightly bound in chains as they looked up to him with hope mixed with fear in their sunken eyes.

Arwyn rushed to release the jaws of one, his paws glowing bright orange and the chains melted away. “What happened?” the black dragon growled low.

“My Lord,” the other dragon barely gasped out, “it's...it's Lumiere...you shouldn't be here...”

“What happened?” Arwyn snapped again.

What she told him next made his heart stop.

“...he has her...he has Ruby...”

...

The door to the second basement room blasted open, and Arwyn strode inside purposefully, his claws crackling with fire.

“You know, I just had that door installed so you couldn't storm your way in here before the surprise was ready,” Lumiere tutted.

Arwyn's eyes blazed with fury as he looked the Imperial up and down. “What in the Wastes is going on? My missing subjects are tied up in the other room? Explain yourself!” the black Spiral demanded.

“Well, my Lord—congrats on the new title by the way—I was merely teaching those ruffians a lesson for the crimes they've committed.” Lumiere folded all six of his arms across his yellow chest.

“What crimes be they?” Arwyn snarled. “You know that all dragons must speak to me about any punishment. And what happened to your wings?”

“So many questions!” chuckled Lumiere. “Perhaps we can discuss a more fitting punishment for those traitors, eh?” The bushy tip of his tail suddenly swept the heavy cloth away from the object he'd been standing in front of. As the cloth fell, it revealed a draconian shaped statue.

“You were hiding a block of ice from me?” Arwyn sneered up at him.

“M...Love...”

Arwyn's ears turned towards the sound, and he squinted when he tried getting a better look at the ice statue, which Lumiere promptly covered back up with the cloth.

“This was the surprise I'd wanted to show you once it was all finished,” Lumiere said, “for your wedding night. Unfortunately the others had attempted to steal it from me before its completion. Shall we?” he asked, gesturing back to the first room.

Arwyn fired past the big dragon and jerked the heavy cloth away from the statue. Its entire form—from the tip of its tail, to the top of the shoulders, and her wings—were solid ice, except for her head.

She turned her pale orange eyes to meet his own.

Flecks of white frost dotted her ruby-red face.

Arwyn froze as he barely choked out her name.

“Ruby?”
