Iolanthe is a quiet, serious dragon who spends most of her time apart from the rest of the clan in quiet meditation. She was born in fire flight, and for a time served as an exaltee of the Flamecaller. However, one day while meditating she accidentally triggered a latent power of astral projection, sending her soul out of her body. She became excited, thinking to use this power to further the agenda of the Flamecaller by spying on the other flights. As she sent her soul further and further afield, she grew more and more overconfident in her ability to evade notice. One day, she thought to send her soul as far as Dragonhome, to see for herself the remains of the Pillar of the World.

Once she arrived there, however, something went wrong. Her disembodied soul fell prey to a lingering pocket of darkness created by the release of the Shade, and she did not have the power to fight it. The young dragon was very nearly swallowed whole by the blackness, but she was spared by the timely aid of none other than the Earthshaker. He recognized her as a servant of the god of fire, but was nonetheless kind to her, and told her of his sorrows pertaining to the schism of the gods and how he had no wish to fight her. Moved by his mercy and compassion, Iolanthe returned to her body and tried to gain audience with her goddess to plead the Earthshaker's case. Incensed by her servant's treachery, the Flamecaller banished Iolanthe, branding her a Fallen, an exaltee who was banished for betraying their god.

Iolanthe was forced to flee the Ashfall Wastes, scorned by all of her flight. She though to seek shelter in Dragonhome, where she knew that the Earthshaker would be kind to her, but by the time she came to rest in the Starfall Isles she knew that this path would help nothing. So, she resolved to find a clan that would accept her despite her supposed betrayal, and let her preach her message of peace and unity among the flights. She eventually found this clan in a remote corner of the Frozen Floes, being led by a guardian named Belial. Most of the clan remains resolutely loyal to the Icewarden, dismissing Iolanthe as crazy, but they don't see her as any sort of threat and tolerate her as long as she doesn't cause problems.
