One day, an unconscious Eris washed up on the shores of Deepsong. When she finally awoke from her coma, nearly a week later, she could recall nothing whatsoever of her past life. Her familiar, found nearby in a state of delirious confusion, professed the same amnesia. Eris had nowhere else to go, so at the Shaman's behest, she remained with Clan Deepsong. Over the next few years, she slowly assimilated into clan life, and became a welcome contributor to Deepsong's prosperity and security.

For a dragon named after the goddess of chaos and discord, Eris is surprisingly levelheaded. Of course, like any nocturne, she enjoys a bit of mischief here and there, but she is one of the most sensible and pragmatic dragons in the clan. Eris doesn't really believe in planning - she prefers to keep her options open and improvise solutions - but she's rarely unprepared for any situation.

Though Eris is always aware of the worst-case scenario, she hopes for the best. Perhaps it's a result of facing one too many an apocalypse, or perhaps it's just her natural whimsy, but it takes a lot to drag her down. After all, if you're spending the next few weeks under the threat of impending doom, you might as well have some fun! At her core, Eris believes that hopeful dragons fight harder and that laughter helps overcome hardship. She is always friendly and charming, willing to lend a patient ear or do anything she can to help.

Eris is quite intelligent and loves astronomy and music - she is an amateur composer and conductor, and plays a diverse selection of instruments competently. In the clan ensemble, she most often plays the flute, but her real passion is vocal music. Though she has no particular aptitude for resonance sympathy, Eris has picked up a few sonomantic techniques from Harmony. In battle, she often serves as a skald, using music to rally her allies.

Unbeknownst to the clan, Eris is also a Servant of the Arcanist.

Several months after Eris came to Clan Deepsong, it was becoming clear to Spira that the loss of her memory was affecting Eris physically. Splitting headaches, fever, nausea, even seizures - the classical symptoms of spiritual sickness.

So Spira told her about her past.

Quote:
Eris, you are a Divine Servant. You made a wish for the wisdom of the Arcanist, and it was granted in me. You served the will of the Deities, combating all manner of foes and protecting Sornieth with your fellow Servants. Though your identities had to remain concealed, your god-given might spread peace and hope to every corner of the land.

We had to flee from your old clan - I cannot speak its name or its memory - because you attracted the wrath of a creature old beyond any living dragon and more powerful than you can imagine. She would have hunted you to the ends of the earth and seas to exact revenge. We hid away your memories so that she could not find you through your dreams, and they must remain hidden for a while longer. If she catches your trail again, you are dead.

I wished to give you some respite from your duties; I know the toll they took on you. I am only telling you all this because I think your mantle is poisoning you. Even though you lost your memory of your Pact, I could not completely sever the connection between you and your mantle without harming you. Your mantle has continued to accumulate divine energy over the last few months. Normally you would be burning it off in the normal course of your service, but you are not and the excess energy is corroding your spirit. It's not safe for you to be in contact with so much of the stuff.

I'm sorry, Eris, but the time for rest is over.

Spira helped Eris gradually recover the abilities she had once had. It came naturally to her, with the ease of long practice - every movement, gesture, and spell felt familiar. There was a certain rightness to everything that had not been there before, a certain fullness and vitality and weight. The sense of coming home, though it was an unfamiliar feeling.

6zWWe96.png

Her abilities reawakened, Eris took up the Servant's mantle again. This time around, she defends the regions surrounding the Seer's Reach - though the Reach itself is heavily protected, the lands along the outskirts of the Reach attract many less savory types. She ranges as far as the Shifting Expanse and the Sunbeam Ruins, but serves mostly in guardianship of the Tidelord. It's unusual for a Servant to serve a Deity that is not their Pactsworn, but in an unusual outburst of independent thought, Spira refused to let Eris return to the Starfall Isles, so the arrangement persists.

Though she rarely shows it, Eris misses her old home terribly. There's an empty place in her heart and mind, a dark gap in her soul. When she closes her eyes she can see the rhythm of the universe - glimmering billows of stardust illuminated with celestial fires, and stars pulsing like her heartbeat. It flows and shimmers, but something is missing from the pattern. Currents of light swirl and diverge, leaving only spaces of desolate black.

Sometimes when she's sleeping, some of that blessed light will encroach on the darkness, and memories drift to the surface. They are fragile and delicate things, disintegrating at the slightest pressure of a thought. When Eris wakes she feels both comforted and bereft. Something of that homesick melancholy remains with her throughout the day, and when she looks up at the brilliant night sky she thinks she can see the faint familiar shapes of faces and places and home.

Occurrences and Plots wrote:
Eris participated in EoE: Sunless Seas as the Arcanist's representative on the Outlier Sea. She helped the Second Crew compile notes on their encounters and coordinate the group's actions. The mission concluded successfully, with the temporary defeat of the Shade and formation of an alliance with the Outliers. Eris returned with a sexy table (now residing in her lair), a sheaf of notes weighing more than a guardian (given into Vely's care), and a newfound appreciation for coatl maidens.
Several years later, Eris was once more called to the Outlier Sea for EoE: Sunless Seas 2. She was one of only a few members of the Second Crew who had returned, somewhat to her disappointment, but she made many new friends among the Third Crew. Together, the crew helped seal the Outer Gates once more, holding back the Outsiders and summoning the Heart of the Sea. Eris, with Spira's help, acted as a record keeper; the sprite's eidetic memory was useful in the collection of information.

She returned exhausted, if considerably more practiced with warding and runic magic. With her she had yet another a sheaf of notes taller than she was, a pet crab from an alternate dimension (name of Mikhail, and very intelligent), and a ring of strange colors. (Zee colors are nameless in Sornieth tongues, though the Outliers name it apocyan.)

Spira

Spira is somewhere between friend and advisor to Eris. The little Arcane sprite has a long memory and a long history, making it one of the wisest creatures in the clan. But, like Eris herself, Spira is much more than it first appears.

Divine Servants are made through Holy Spirits. A Holy Spirit is the manifestation of the contract between a deity and a mortal - a Pact forged with ancient magic that binds a Servant to the will of a god. Each Spirit is a tutor, messenger, guardian, and guide to its bound Servant.

Spira is Eris's Pactholder. As a Holy Spirit, it serves as a conduit between the Arcanist and Eris, as well as a compendium of magical knowledge and a channel for pure Arcane energy. But Spira also holds a fragment of Eris's soul, something that was never meant to happen. Holy Spirits are intrinsically of the Divine; they are emotionless manifestations of their deity's will. Their energies, their animas do not coexist with those of mortals.

Except somehow Spira does.

Mikhail

An unusually intelligent crab, rescued from the shores of a dream of the future. His carapace glimmers faintly with Zee-colors, though the magic of the deities dulls it to a faint glow. He can often be found perched on Eris's shoulder as she studies; one might even think he is learning magic...? Certainly he is capable of it, based on Spirit's extensive conversations with it; Mikhail is known to be fond of philosophy and magical theory. Eris is not blessed with the ability to speak directly with him, so Spira is usually dragooned into interpreting.

Exalting Eris to the service of the Tidelord will remove them from your lair forever. They will leave behind a small sum of riches that they have accumulated. This action is irreversible.
