BEAUCERON'S been in the County long enough most folks don't even remember when she showed up. Back then she wasn't half so fancy, just a scrappy no-name drifter with a haunted look and a lead fist. She took any work on offer, which was mostly agricultural in nature. That suited her just fine -- not because of any elemental alignment or anything like that, but because there's very little room for getting-to-know-you chitchat in between hauling bonewood logs or sowing next year's harvest into the ungrateful soil.

The land has grown in significance in Beau's life since those early days. Back then it was just a means of making money, but now it's something more. Something she loves, in the way a parent loves a child. She saved up her earnings a while back and bought the deed to the Gold Dust Table homestead -- that old house sitting up there on the tableland territory where the bulk of the Rifters' amaranth crops are grown. She fixed the house right up and then just sort of naturally fell into taking care of the amaranth fields, too (the tidy subsidy from the County's coffers came later, after that first, unexpectedly successful, harvest season).

The amaranth grows taller and bushier than it ever did before Beau moved up there. Weeds never seem wily enough to take root in the fields, and pests steer well clear of the Table. When black blizzard season rolls around, folks swear you can see the great clouds of locusts split clear around the Table and leave the amaranth fields untouched. Nobody knows why or what Beauceron's done to get that effect for those fields, and nobody ever asks. It'd be like asking the sun why it rises; it's just not a done thing.

IMPRESSIONS

Handstitched clothes in fabrics a hair too fancy for a simple farmer, though the layer of amaranth dust covering her and everything she owns obscures the finery somewhat. Her hide is weathered and well-worn, crisscrossed with scars and pockmarks that tell a story of a long, hard life. Her smile is warm enough but her eyes are hard green-amber stone, watchful and just a mite suspicious of strange faces.

RELATIONSHIPS

GUTXI was a skittish Feral waif when Beau found them, fleeing for their life from something that howled and snarled in the dark but never dared to cross the threshhold of Beau's cedarwood torchlight. She never meant to keep Gutxi around, she just never sent them away even after their leg healed up. They're partners now -- whatever that means.
