Azurite is first mate under Captain Pyrite, on the ship Marco's Vengeance. He was previously a guard in light territory, protecting valuable ruin sites from thieves and marauders. However, the attempts to plunder the sites were relentless, and his frustration and helplessness only grew over the years as endless criminals came from seemingly nowhere. Many of his fellow guards were injured over the years, and more than a few were killed, and as a group they took down many would-be thieves. However, the endless onslaught began to feel pointless. One day he was eating his lunch, chatting idly with a few co-workers, when one pulled out their lunch and found it covered in ants. One guard scrubbed at the line of ants across the floor with his foot, but they just kept on marching forward, filling the gap. Another guard, a tundra, got up with a sigh and followed the trail, nose close to the dirt. Eventually he wound back to a tiny hole in the ground and swiftly dug it up with his sharp claws. Black ants swarmed over him but couldn't get through the thick fur, and he shook them off with ease. "No use killing them as they come" he told them as he sat back down to eat "You have to destroy the nest, fix it at the source." Azurite realised then what he wanted to do. The helpless frustration over the endless onslaught of criminals lifted, and was replaced with determination. Why let them group up and attack him when he could be hunting them? He quit his job as a guard that day, and set out in search of a way to fulfil his goal. Rumours of a lone pirate who hunted other pirates reached him eventually, and he sought Pyrite out. At first she was wary of him, as she tended to be of any law enforcer. Azurite kept his head down and worked hard at every task she gave him. As a much larger dragon, he could probably have taken her in a fight. He considered doing so more than once in the early days, so entrenched was his hatred of pirates. Over time, he realised she shared his passion, and he came to respect the younger, smaller dragon greatly as a captain and a friend. Pyrite grew to respect him as well, and in time she chose him to be her first mate. Azurite finds satisfaction in his work, but now he has a secondary goal in life - to protect and aid his captain, and to keep Marco's Vengeance in good order for her. He took a mate eventually; Carnelian, a butcher from their home port. Carnelian jokes that she is the secondary woman in his life - Pyrite being the first. However, there is no jealousy. Carnelian knows that their relationship is built on deep flowing respect and camaraderie, and doesn't seek to compete or displace his loyalty to her. She sought a friendship with Pyrite instead, and the two get along very well, even spending time together when Pyrite takes time ashore leaving Azurite in command of the ship. Carnelian and Azurite love any shore time he manages to take, and she is always looking forward to the next time they get to see each other. |
