The trees drew into themselves, shivering under the rain on a cold autumn morning, when Conway arrived. Always, when he arrived, it rained. Fearful and yearning for familiarity, he habitually fled back into the forest. No dragon disturbed him, no matter how long his absence, and always the rain returned, bringing him along with it. They knew, as they all came to eventually learn, that the seeds of the orchard tied them back home. But Conway would not accept this. He planted his seed in the farthest reach of the cliffs, out of spite. Away from the clan, where it could not possibly take root. As a hatchling he never believed, and no other since has resisted the clan and orchard so long and so passionately. The rain stopped, and like Conway predicted, his seed did not grow. When the trees bloomed, he watched the clan celebrate. When the first fruits appeared he watched them help one another in their harvest. He blamed them all, and left once again. The rain was barely a drizzle when he returned and collapsed among the orchard. He did not feel like he was home, he did not want to stay, he did not belong, but he could not leave. Conway wept. No dragon knows truly what words were expressed, but Conway rested beneath the orchard for a whole moon, being comforted and soothed by the trees around him. They whispered in his ear, caressed him with their leaves, and when he finally stirred, he tended to his seed obediently. Sensitive to storms, he is often drawn to the cliffs, watching out over the ocean long before the sky turns grey and the seafoam brews. Overtime he has become the resident lighthouse, guarding his posts by the cliffs and protecting the clan from imminent dangers of the open sea. His breath of fire and lightning guides all who are lost. |
