Biography
F A D E
FACTION: AMALTHEA
the elderly scholar
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━❦━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
Fade is an old dragon, and was a respected elder of his previous clan before he left to care for Ilhuitl and Citlalli. He has spent most of his life as a scholar, and as a result shares none of the superstitions of his clanmates regarding hatchlings born pale being bad omens at best and walking curses at worst. He couldn't bear to see hatchlings abandoned because of their natural coloration. So, the day his patriarch told the twins' mother that they needed to leave, he made the choice to go with them. His own plumage has begun to fade and grow brittle with age, and so he took this trait as his name, largely in order to show his young charges that there was no shame in being a Coatl with no bright coloration. He had never been a father before coming to Clan of the Outcast, but he learned as he went during their travels across Sornieth to their new home. Nocturnal's presence helped greatly, because though she was awkward around the hatchlings, two pairs of adult eyes were better than one, and having a fellow intellectual along lifted his spirits. It was Tigraine who took to the young ones immediately, though the Guardian always seemed a bit sad as he watched them. Once he arrived at the Clan of the Outcast, Fade threw himself into learning about Nature's customs and culture. As new members joined the clan, he picked their brains about where they'd come from and why they'd left, and as a result is now the dragon to go to with questions about other areas of Sornieth. Nearly everyone within the clan holds him in high esteem, and he is quite happy to be an elder at his new home. |

Interviews with Outcasts, by Nocturnal, Clan Educator and Linguist My Arrival to the Clan, as told by Fade, Clan Elder Fade has draped himself in the pile of cushions across from my writing desk, where I teach the hatchlings, the washed-out plumage that gives him his name leaving dust on the cloth beneath him. He notes my distaste and chuckles. “Not all of us are hatched with mighty manes. Some settle for feathers.” He folds his wings and rolls onto his side, now shedding leaves from the branches at his shoulders. “You’ve settled into Nature quite nicely.” He plucks up a leaf and inspects it. “It was the least I could do, considering all Nature has done for me. Along those lines, what can I do for you?” I indicate the papers on the desk. “A pet project. I’m cataloguing the history of our clan, and was wondering if you would share a bit about our journey here.” Fade gives a musical Coatl snort. “You were there for it.” “I can’t interview myself.” “Nonsense. A smart girl like you?” He sees the look on my face and relents. “Fine, fine. Shall I start at the beginning?” “Please.” Fade rolls onto his back, leaves and feathers rustling. “Now, you may not know this, but I’m a sick old man. My health started to fail me about three years ago. I used to be shades of deep green and brown, not this mess I am now.” He runs a forefoot over his mottled, ragged breast feathers. “The clan I came from was all Coatl, and they had some funny ideas about what a dragon’s color meant. Sure, washed-out feathers like mine means I’m sick, but they thought little hatchlings born white were flat-out cursed.” Fade looks up at me, frowning. “You’ve seen Ilhuitl and Citlalli. They’re two of the healthiest babies ever hatched. But their mother was going to abandon them in order to keep the clan safe from some curse.” “Why do you think the rest of your clan believed in this so strongly, yet you didn’t?” He taps the book at his side. “I’ve done a lot of reading over the years. I can tell the difference between a sickness and someone’s natural looks. Don’t make that face. You know as well as I do it comes down to education.” When I don’t reply, he continues: “So I stood up for them. Said I’d take care of them. And the elders told me that was fine, but I’d be taking care of them somewhere else.” “So you left.” “Sure did! With these two hatchlings who couldn’t walk yet, clinging to my back as I went down the road.” “I remember. It looked sweet.” “We’d only been on the road three days when we found you in that town. Ragged clothes, no pearl. You were the one who told us to come here.” “…I remember that, too.” Fade chuckles. “Do you remember how hard you fought me when I suggested you come with us?” “Yes.” “How did you hear about this clan, anyway? We were a long, long way from here.” I don’t want to answer, but I know I need to for the sake of the story I’m putting down. “I was trading in information when you found me. I made sure I knew all the gossip, because it meant staying fed and clothed.” “Can’t imagine why you wanted to give that life up.” “Change is hard for some.” He gives me a wide grin. “I’m glad you came with us. The babies needed you. I needed you. I could barely understand Draconian, and the little ones couldn’t speak at all.” “Thank you.” Fade takes a long look around my library. “Do you really need me to tell you the rest? I’m sure you could take it from here.” “Not with the same flair as you.” “Is that what we’re calling it? Fine, fine. It was just the four of us on the road for a while. That was interesting. We probably wouldn’t have made it here if Tigraine hadn’t found us and fallen for the little ones’ antics.” I nod in agreement. “If ever a group of dragons needed a Guardian.” “The kids still think the ground flowers where he walks. Pretty sure they always will. I don’t think I should be the one telling his story, though.” I consider this for a moment. “I believe that’s more than fair. It might be gossip if we did it.” “Exactly.” “I will follow up with him, then. Thank you for your time, Fade.” He rises and brushes the cushions clean. “Anything for you, girl. I owe you for helping raise the kids.” “It’s my job.” “Not back then, it wasn’t.” He coughs and wobbles slightly as he makes for the exit. “See you around.” I’m frowning down at my paper, and writing about frowning down at my paper, as though both those things aren’t utterly silly. But leave it to a grumpy old dragon to cut an interview short and force me to coax a story out of a younger, larger, and infinitely grumpier one. Two stories in, and I’ve already hit a wall. |
