Mainyu has always been a trickster; since the beginning, since the three traveled together in their own tiny pack, brought together by misfortune and circumstance.
(And before that, too, when the Paleblood Empress went to her most trusted general and told him my dear, i'm thinking of starting an orchard, and Mainyu looked around at the dead ground and the tall, dark, dead pines and said you do that, honey.)
Toxicant was more serious than either of her boys, and Auraka could get lost, sometimes, in his head- and so Mainyu was happy for all three of them. He would make the shadows of creatures with his frills in the light cast by flickering campfires, when none of them could get to sleep. He laughed loud and joyful, when no one else could muster the strength to put up a smile.
And then, one night when, for once, Auraka was sleeping deep enough to dream, Mainyu traced patterns down his back and felt his nails catch on birch bark. Auraka winced a bit, but didn’t wake; and with no one watching Mainyu didn’t bother to stop the smile fading from his eyes.

Mainyu loved them; both of them; he still does; and so when the other fae approached him, her frills too damaged with hoarfrost for him to tell anything of her emotions, and said do you want to keep them safe, darling—
he didn’t say no.

The ice that lived in Sgiathach lives in him, now. He has enough power to do anything.

He scares them, sometimes, he thinks. Auraka looks at him, sometimes, when the moon is full and the veins in his frills stand out like dark water on ice, and he flinches. Cantarella slides a silver-clawed hand across his back, soothing; and jerks away when she reaches the bits of frost and shattered pearl that have embedded themselves into the nape of his neck.

It’s alright. He’ll protect them from a distance, if he has to.

And yet.
