Of the three travelers, Auraka was always the most sensible. Mainyu was quick to forgive any slight, any wrong, and Toxicant was the exact opposite (which might’ve been worse)- and so Auraka kept them on the path they’d settled on, and made sure they had food to eat and water to drink, and when he grew ill with something even magic couldn’t cure, a sickness that turned his very bones to heartwood, well-- He didn’t panic, not like Mainyu did. He didn’t rush ahead to search for a cure. He figured, alright, we’ll settle, and when we’ve settled I’ll go looking for an alchemist and we’ll fix this when we get to it. He didn’t mean to leave Toxicant alone, poor dear, but he left as Mainyu was packing his bags, and he never did say a real goodbye to either of them. The curse passes through trust, the alchemist said. There aren’t many ways to cure that sort of thing, other than hope someone loves you enough to pass it on, or tearing it out entirely. Auraka knew, with visceral certainty, that if another of the three thought they could save him they would take the curse onto themselves. They would harden like bark, a lifeless statue, all because they couldn’t see past the immediate. They would think he was dead if he didn’t return. He never said a real goodbye. He tore the sickness out. Grasped the parts of him that glinted like raw bark and pulled until it glistened red and pulled a little more and walked and walked until he couldn’t feel his legs and- -didn’t recall walking back to the Orchard, but that was where Rosario found him, unconscious and bleeding from a thousand different scrapes and the arteries underneath were amber. The little golden guardian patched him up as best he could, with what he had. Kept him secret from the new matriarch (and there was a new matriarch. Gods. He shouldn’t have left Toxicant alone.) Luxury found out anyways, of course, and she burned down the laboratory with Auraka inside, of course, and he may call himself the more sensible one but when Rosario walks through the fire itself to pull him from it the only thought in his mind is thank you, thank you, thank you. Auraka doesn’t speak much to anyone except Rosario, now, not even the other Two, returned from their own exiles. Because Rosario saved him, and that means something. Because Auraka was always the sensible one. Because his bones are still heartwood, deep inside, and he can’t tear them out. Because the curse of the Feywild passes through trust, and Rosario trusts him anyways. |
