Biography
MAHAR
╭━━━━━⚔━━━━━╮ foresight aptitude presence ╰━━━━━━━━━━━╯ |
But the best thing for you would be queen, so be Queen. Back from the altar, bathed in light. T H E • Q U E E N ' S • H A N D Long before the dragons of Clan Paralian had a well-established web of gossip strung between them, there was one tale the right hand of the Queen swore on her pearl by: while the King wandered, the Queen watched. After all, how could an abandoned guardian whelp survive the Wastes alone? To hear Iris tell it, after years of silently watching and assisting him, the Queen made her presence known and offered herself as his mate. What did she see? Why did she help him? In the days before, you might've asked Iris. She might've even given you an answer. But when the Queen offered herself at the altar, Iris did the same. With her mysterious and impossible return, all the clan can do is wonder, and whisper... OF • W H A T • W I L L • B E The chaos upon her departure was nothing compared to the chaos upon her return. Of course, Mahar wasn't witness to all of that. She wasn't there after her ascent. She wasn't baptized in ash at the eruption, didn't watch her King turn black and magma-veined. She'd never hear it told that Scarlett or Arista or Mahidevran or even Lilithe filled the void that she left, in what ways they each dared or desired. She did not wake each dawn to news of another flight of exalts, their clan's numbers ever-dwindling, or to the arrival of some strange guest. But she knew all the same. Some things you know by context, by observation. She knew the ways of her clan by the cogs she did and did not set turning, knowing that they would spin with or without her. And some things you know by another name, though she herself had never named it. It was not as simple as intuition, nor quite as arcane as prophecy. It was a light, a single, silent candle that had always burned within her. The knowledge of what will be. The flint that sparked that flame, she would never know until it came --tears that turn to smoke as they hit the black sand, shed by a hatchling, weak and starving-- but once it had, instantly, she would know, as if she had always known. By the certainty of that light, she did everything. Here the consequence was joy, there the consequence was sorrow. Sometimes it was blood, and sometimes it was plenty. Once, it was plenty of blood. But the knowing, she found, not the consequence, was what mattered. It was why she left, and why she returned. She would not tell her clan this, but also knew that none would dare ask. It was why, no sooner had she returned, that she announced another departure. Only some of them would accompany her. The rest of them would stay, and wait, as they'd become quite accustomed to doing... It was how she found the Hewn Keep, and how she knew Madrigal and Moloch, Dagmar and Aldegar, Evey and Adalheidis without knowing them. And perhaps - she thinks to herself in the evenings, when the half-light of the Hewn City matches the last light of day - it is how they knew her, too. |
