Ruby
A fancy rat, indeed.
Alizarin is a priest. Or so he says.

"For your devotion, each of you has my gratitude."

So she had returned. In the years following her exaltation, the clan had divided itself into those who believed she would, and those who didn't. Alizarin belonged to neither party. Because he did not care. Now, he watches her body shimmer as she paces the length of their great hall, her eyes locking with each of them as she passes. She has become more beautiful.

"You have been loyal. Steadfast. Patient. I did not ask it of you, but you were."

Choice words. The Queen is no fool. In her absence, the clan has been a lot of things. Steadfast, he might give them. Loyal? A select few. But she was being generous with patient. And she was not one to be generous...

"But now, I will ask something of you."

"Zar."

She has become more powerful, too. He can feel it, radiating from her. Like heat from a bonfire. It was blistering, before --fire dragons always are-- but now, it has another quality to it. Her eyes have changed, too. And that means her magi--

"Alizarin, you idiot! The Queen just spoke to you."

He had not heard Arista's subtle hiss before, but now Lilithe's haughty breath scorches his flank. She's scowling up at him. The nerve.

"Your Majesty." He arches and lowers his head, his bow the picture of grace. He feels Lilithe sneer beside him. Let her. She wishes she looked this good.

"Alizarin." In all his years, he does not believe she has ever looked him in the eye for this long. That look, it's moving. Compelling. And her voice. No one has ever quite spoken his name in such a way. That heat is building, between his ribs. At the base of his spine. He resents her. To have this kind of power over someone, with a look, with a word. It's a kind of sorcery he's practiced in, learned, to varying success. But the Queen? She was born with it. As innate as her fire.

"As Clan Paralian's archmagus, you will accompany us to the Hewn City. The rest of the Red Guard will remain here, to hold our ancestral lands."

" What? "

The slightest smile ghosts across the Queen's face, and she might have laughed, if she was anyone else. Arista has her beak pinched between her talons in embarrassment, and Lilithe is going to lose her mind.

"You heard me, Red Priest. I need you. There will not be many of us in this party. One of them must be you."
