Although water dragons are known for being seers and mystics, it's only the greatest among them who have clear and consistent visions of the future. Foreseeing is a tricky art, and knowing exactly when, where, and what you're seeing is harder still. Usually they find, when their magic comes to them, that their specialty is some smaller thing, the ability to see an hour into the future on the spot where they stand, or to predict the romances of the dragon whose paw they hold. Amphitrite did not expect to be one of the great seers. In truth, she had always been as much of a dreamer as a mystic. Her only hope was that her vision would grant her wonderful sights, of far-off places and daring deeds. When she performed her first major scrying, on the night of the full moon when the pull of the tides was strongest, peering into the reflection of a mirror of polished seaglass, it seemed to her that her hopes had come true. She saw, more clearly than any of her previous fleeting visions, a great battle. A massive guardian whose ragged crimson wings furled out like banners led a charge against a horde of misshapen monsters. He watched breathlessly until the guardian's army was brought to victory, and they crowned their noble leader to rule over them. When the vision in the mirror cleared, leaving her in the present again, she hurried to report the vision. Her telling drew a small crowd, because of the compelling way she described the desperate fight, the innate righteousness of the commanding guardian, and the thrilling flow of battle. The elder seers of her clan all agreed that she must be seeing visions of the past, a great fight against the Shade perhaps, and set out to search their history books for the battle she had described. But despite their thorough search, they couldn't find a record of a battle that even resembled it. No guardian had been crowned king after such a battle that they could find. Even more confusingly, the further visions Amphitrite came back with never matched any historical event they could find. Perhaps she was seeing the future, but it was unheard of for a single seer to be the only one seeing what seemed like such a pivotal event. If a major battle was going to happen, the importance of it ought to be drawing the visions of every other great seer who saw the future as clearly as she did. Finally, in the usual self-fulfilling way things proceed when one of your number can see the future, they figured it out because one of them had a vision of the conversation they were just about to have discussing what was going on with her. Amphitrite wasn't seeing the past, nor was she seeing the future, or even the present. Her visions were completely false, things that had never happened and would never happen in their world. It occurred from time to time, but was never mentioned much because most of the seers of Water flight find it very embarrassing, and bad press besides. However, Amphitrite didn't mind. She'd gotten a taste for the excitement of an audience hanging on her every word, and found that describing the events of her visions, searching for exactly the right way to convey the beauty and emotion of them, was far more to her liking than sitting in a scrying chamber and scribbling down cryptic notes of things that would happen. Why should she care whether her visions were true or not? They were her stories, to take and to tell as she liked. She left the water flight, setting out on her own, and telling her stories wherever she could find an audience. She prefers to wander, but her tales are so compelling that she often finds herself welcomed into the lair of a normally reclusive clan in the Ashfall Wastes. A wandering bard hears many things, after all, of interest to a clan who deals in secrets. ~Mirrorstone |
